Babies: 3 - 6 Months

What is waking her up??? (long)

Hi everyone,

Please help if you can!  This has a lot of information for the best diagnosis.  My 5 month old has been sleeping badly since 3 months but, lately, she is waking up a minimum of 7 times a night.

-Usually from her bedtime (7:15ish) until about 10:00 I can just put the pacifier back in and she will go to sleep.  After 10:00 I have to put my hand under her neck and shh her and she will be back asleep in 2 minutes.

-Sometimes when she wakes up she HAS her pacifier.

-She goes to sleep at bedtime and for naps completely on her own in her crib.

-Sometimes she wakes in 45 minute increments but sometimes it is completely random like one hour after her last waking.

-She has white noise, a humidifier, we have tried making the room hotter and cooler....

-Sometimes when she wakes up she does do a bridge-like move (arching back and pushing up her feet) but she doesn't seem like she has any acid or gas issues during the day and she usually wakes up fussing first rather than yelling.

- I think I am having a fore-milk/hindmilk imbalance that happened when I was home for so long over the holidays rather than pumping at work.  I can barely pump enough to keep up with demand because I am a terrible pumper and I am hesitant to add more pumping sessions and increase the foremilk.

- no sign of teeth.  I've been saying she is teething for 3 months and am not saying it again until there are actually teeth I can see.

- when I go in there, she will cry, sometimes hysterically, for like 2 minutes and then instantly fall asleep mid-cry.

I thought it was the pacifier waking her up but shouldn't that only happen in 45 minute increments?  Could she just have a middle of the night sleep association with me that she doesn't have other times?  Some minor discomfort in her stomach?  Anyone have any thoughts??  Seven times is a lot to wake up each night....

Help and thanks in advance!!

Re: What is waking her up??? (long)

  • i have no clue mama, i just don't like seeing posts get a hundred views and no replys! it's hard to say when i'm clueless most of the time with my LO. just like you we've had horrible sleep since 3months!

the waking up and screaming for 2minutes and then back to sleep mid-cry is unusual though. my little one had a night terror (or that was the best diagnosis i could come up with) and he woke up screaming, cried hysterically for several minutes, kicked and squirmed, and then fell back asleep as if nothing ever happened. it rocked my world but didn't seem to bother him in the least!

oh and the teething that. like you i said he was teething for months. i stopped saying it because there was never a tooth. well he got two teeth in two days last week! they are on their way! so who knows, maybe your LO is dealing with some of that.

all else fails call the pedi!

  • I don't have any pervious experience with some of these things, just what I've read here and in other research.  It seems to me (just my opinion) to be a combination of a few things.  have you tried to puch back her bed time?  My LO gets tired about 7 as well, but if I were to put her to bed then, we would start our day at like 3 am!  Maybe let her take a catnap and put her down at 9?  That's what seems to work for us.  With the arcing back, maybe try a few gas drops/gripe water before or right after you feed her?  I couldn't nurse, so I am unfamiliar with any foremilk/hindmilk imbalances.  Any my LO does the crying in the middle of the night every once in a while, and during naps as well.  HTH and I hope things begin to work themselves out - GL!
