baby shower ideas- for practical items and good times

Just reading all the posts of people upset over having to return stuff from baby showers and I wanted to throw out a few ideas that people did for me that were awesome! I know it won't help those of you who have already had your shower but maybe those of you who haven't had one yet could suggest to your gracious hostess...

1. Frozen meal shower - if you have a freezer big enough, ask for a shower where everyone brings a frozen entre for you to stockpile up on for when it's harder to plan and cook a meal.(I never had a shower like this but I would love it!)

2. Group gift - if your hostess puts on the invite to send $15 $20 to her if you are interested in going in on a group gift she could go get one of your bigger ticket items... like stroller or carseat or something...

3. Build a library shower - bring a baby book inscribed with a message inside the cover.

4. Bring a birthing bead - this was my coolest shower.... everyone brought a bead to symbolize themselves, and one bead per child they have had... everyone went around and told why they chose the specific bead and we made a birthing necklace for me to wear during labor to remind me of the strength of all the women who had gone before me into motherhood. It was cool to hear birth stories.

5. Diaper dinner - I'm on my 4th child now, so I haven't had a traditional shower since my first baby but I prefer these kinds anyway... My girlfriends and I will most likely go out for dinner the month before I'm due and they'll all bring me a package of diapers... they usually ask which kind I use. Some people get newborn sizes, some get sizes one, size two and it all works out!

Just some ideas for those of you who are so frustrated

I like this one too! I wish I would have thought about this to suggest it to my hostess! I think I have friends that know I'm planning on preparing frozen meals and I think I have a few friends who plan on bringing a meal over during the first week Evelyn is born!

I agree, these are great ideas, IF you are willing to give up the idea of a traditional shower. I think it's tacky if you have a regular shower asking for a baby gift and then ask them also to bring a book, diapers, a frozen dish etc. I think these would also be good for a second time mom who has friends asking what she might need/want. These would also be really good if you have more than one group of friends offering to throw a shower.

I found that you can never have too many onesies, therefore, at my shower we had fabric markers and stencils and onesies of all sizes. Everyone wrote their name on the bottom of the onesie and proceeded to color to their hearts desire! It was a lot of fun and I can hardly wait to take picture of baby in each onesie and send them to the friend/family that created it!
