HI May Mommies! I also posted this in the baby names forum but really appreciate the honest opinions and ideas from May Moms!! I am looking for a girl name that is classic, timeless, etc but that is not so popular. My two favorites are Ava and Ella but they seem to be on top of the popular lists right now. Are there are names that are similar but no so popular? Despite their popularity..I love Ava and Ella and are still strongly considering them as I think they are so pretty. Any of your opinions are appreciated!
Re: Classic girl names that are not SO popular
After having our DD I really got over worrying whether the name was a popular one or not. If you love the name I think you should go for it. This time around if we have a girl we will go with Olivia, which is super popular.
FWIW I love Ava!

I agree, I dislike popularity. If your library has a copy, or you're willing to spend $8, check out the book Bring Back Beatrice! It's basically this same idea of classic names, popular and not.
Maybe think of names that could have Ella as a nn if you wanted but that give her other options? Eleanor (though this is also becoming popular), Elliana, Anabelle, etc?
I'm personally a fan of the names Charlotte and Annabella, and they aren't the most popular either (which is why I like them lol)
You may want to consider looking up a list of names Jane Austen used in her books (on that note, Jane is an interesting name too lol). I've always loved the names she used for her characters. Very classic, feminine names.
I agree with the not so popular names. I love the name Ella if you had to choose one. My daughter has 4 Ava's in her class and we know 3 others. I just don't want my child to be Ava B. or Ave S. you know?. I also like the names Lydia, Eva, and Francine. They are not soooo popular. Good luck. It's so fun to name a girl! Boys are much harder!
I want to read this book just for the title! I love classic but not so popular names. Some ones that were on my list if we were having a girl were, Emmaline, Beatrix, Audrey, and Eleanor. DH shot them all down but I still love them!

Eleanor is getting more and more popular every day. People are choosing Eleanor and going with the popular NN of Ellie or Ella. I see it seriously climbing up the 2011 list when it comes out this May. I loved that name but DH hated it..
We are going with Amelia which is slightly popular and gaining popularity too.. but it's a family name and I love it!
Have you thought about Margaret, Ramona, Darla, Clara, etc?
We went with Abigail for DD - which at the time wasnt all too popular. This DD will be Paige - classic but not overused!
Good luck!
I would not let a names popularity discourage me from giving it to my LO. At some point it will be more popular than not (unless you go completely off the grid)...
Name her what feels right, both are great names.
This website is awesome! It's where we found our not so popular classic/vintage names.
I feel like many of the classic names are always going to be popular. We aren't worrying too much about where our baby's name is on the list of popularity. In fact, our top names are pretty high up but they are names we like.
What about Evelyn? I know it's popular, but I feel like it's a timeless name and can have a nickname that is similar to your name choices.
Truthfully, classic girl names are getting popular and I feel like any classic name you choose, you most likely won't be the only one.
With that said, I feel there is a HUGE difference between popular and trendy. Even if it is popular, a classic name is beautiful and will never be out of style. So even if there are 10 Ella's in her class or 10 Emma's it'll always be that way because they are solid, good names. It's not like naming your daughter something trendy like Brynlee or Kayden and that becoming popular.

Yeah! I love classic older names! Some suggestions that I love are:
Maggie, Megan, Molly, Rachel, Claire, Susan, Marie
If we had a girl we were going to go with Grace Amelia. I think both of those names are classic and pretty, but not hugely popular. I think Grace was somewhere in the 20s for the top 100 names last year. Popular, but not so much that every 2nd or 3rd girl has that name...
My personal favorite that DH vetoed was Natalie. Also classic and pretty, but not overly used.
Good luck!
Charlotte is actually becoming quite popular. I think its in the top 100 Names. My cousin has a daughter and they named her charlotte but call her charli.
Well, on my shortlist there's: Catherine, Elise, Eleanor, Beatrice, Celeste, Eloise.
All classic but not too popular.
Eleanor Noelle - 18/05/12 Claire Elisabeth - 16/-5/10
i love this..thank you!

This is a great list!!!
I LOVE Emmaline but hubby just shot it down big time. :-(
Ah, well then I'll scratch Charlotte off the list (:
