Hello Ladies! This is the birth story of our little girl - Kayla Ruth - born Jan 5th at 5:07 am weighing in at 8 lbs, 13 oz. 22 inches long!
On the morning of wednesday, Jan 4th, I started to get more pink discharge and assumed it was my mucous plug, I had a really good sleep that night, so I woke up feeling quite refreshed despite my fever and cold from the past two days. I had been taking tylenol for the fever and my asthma meds for my cough. (My family Dr. just told me to wait it out since it was probably a virus he thougt.)
Anyways, that morning I was feeling 'crampy'. I told my DH to head into work and if these 'crampy' feelings became more like timeable contractions then I would call him. So throughout the day my crampy feeling turned into contractions. DH called me a few times to check in with me. I told him that I was fine and that I would call him in the afternoon. Well around 2:30pm I started having contractions 5 min apart, so I called DH and told him it was time. We don't have a car, so my MIL drove DH to pick me up at home. We drove to the hospital and arrived close to 3pm. There we waited in the waiting room to see the nurses in triage. By this time I was having painful contractions. I was one of the first of many people waiting to get a bed in triage. The nurse assessed me and found I was 5-6 cm dialated already with bulging water sac. We were moved to a delivery room at 4:30pm. Then I was hooked up to an IV for antibiotics (since I had the fever). The staff was worried that I would pass on a fever to our LO. So I agreed at that time to get an epidural (even thought I originally wanted to go natural). With the fever and cough labouring without the epi sounded dreadful. At 5 pm, the epi was administered and the on call OB broke my water. At this time, there was meconium in the water. Pitocin was added along with my antibiotics and IV. It took until 2 am on Jan 5th to dialate to 10 cm with a slight lip of cervix left. I did some pushes with the nurses, and the lip wouldn't give, so I was placed on my side and waited for 30 mins. This helped and I was ready to push out our baby.
I pushed on and off for another 2 hrs, with breaks for oxygen and time to catch my breath. The baby's head was close to crowning, the nurse could see her hair, but I just couldn't do the last bit. It was very hard for me....and I was getting discouraged.
At 4:30 am I was given the dreadful news from the on call OB, that if I didn't have the baby by 5 am, she was going to do a C/S. So the OB got the staff ready and she decided to do an episiotomy and vacuum for about 3 pushes. My knees were up near my face as I pushed the hardest I've ever done in my life! Out came Kayla Ruth at 5:07 am. The nurses and pediatrician took her to suction and check her for fever. They got out the meconium she swallowed and she didn't have a fever. So that was great! I kept asking DH if she cried, she did! It took the OB about 45 mins to stitch me up, deliver the placenta and massage my uterus. It felt like forever before they finished and placed Kayla on my chest to breastfeed.
LO came out so fast with the vacuum that the cord snapped and DH wasn't able to cut the cord, but he said he was just happy I was ok and LO was healthy.
Afterwards we were taken to our postpartum room, where I stayed on IV antibiotics for 2 days to insure I wasn't sent home with a fever. Our little girl continued to show no signs of fever, which was a relief!
We came home yesterday morning. I'm healing well and we are getting into a routine with breastfeeding.
