used crib mattress?

Would you use a used crib mattress?  A friend offered us hers. It's organic and has only been used with one child.  I know that cribs/car seats and the like are always things you should buy new, but this is a trusted source and if you reuse your crib mattress for a second child isn't it technically used?

I'm trying to balance my new mom craziness with my frugality and I'm not sure who's going win out!

Re: used crib mattress?

  • I used the one from my neice, my DS used it and I'm going to use it for DD.  They are in the crib for such a short time it really is perfeclty fine.  If I knew that you didn't need half the baby stuff I got at my shower I would have returned it all and got diapers!!! Sad to say but the baby stage is so short and soon they need big things like twin beds and big kid burrows...crazy!! lol save when you can!!

  • I would definitely consider it if it was from someone I knew.

  • I'd use it.  DD's toddler bed uses a crib mattress the way it's set up now.  It will eventually convert to a full-sized bed, but right now it's like a day bed with one railing.  She's using the same mattress that was in her crib.  She's 3.

  • We got out mattress from a close friend.  It was only used for less than a year and it looks brand new.  It is a 250 dollar mattress, so that is money we don't have to spend.

  • We are getting a crib and mattress from my brother, it is not a drop side.  So yes as long as you know where it came from I think it is fine.

  • Thanks ladies! I figured that is was fine since it's from a trusted source. I just started to question my judgement after reading some SIDS info...need to stay off of google!

  • If I knew the person I'd take it. I'd also take a crib or car seat from a friend if it wasn't a recalled model and I knew it hadn't been in an accident.

It actually just occured to me that both cribs are hand me downs and a friend is giving me one of her car seats.

  • Yes. Most crib mattresses aren't used very long. My oldest's mattress is actually a hand-me-down from my niece, and it's still firm and in good condition. And my daughter has been using it herself for over two years now.
