March XP: Exercise and elevated BP- WWYD?

Last Wednesday I went for my regularly scheduled OB appointment and I found out that my BP is elevated quite a bit. It's not "high",but it's very high compared to what's normal for me. My OB put me on a low-sodium diet and I go back for weekly visits now. I've been very nervous and dilligent about watching my sodium intake and boosting the fruits and vegetables to counter the effects of salt. My doctor didn't mention anything about modifying any activities at this point, but I'm so nervous I just don't want to do anything to make matters worse. I've been working out at least 5x a week since I got my BFP (nothing like triatholon type training, just a good 45 min aerobic routine most days of the week), but now I'm skeptical because of my BP. I go back tomorrow so I'll be sure to ask these questions, but in my situation, would you continue to workout as normal until your doctor says otherwise, or would you try to take things a little easier?

Re: March XP: Exercise and elevated BP- WWYD?

  • I had hypertension prior to getting pregnant and was told that exercise can help lower it. If you feel dizzy at all, see any spots, or just feel off I would stop immediately. Also, drink tons of water.

On a side note, my BP has been really bad the past few weeks and they found that when I lay on either side it's normal, but when I'm sitting, standing, or launch on my back it spikes. I guess it has to do with the position of the babies. Not sure if that's a twins thing or something that could be true in your case, but it couldn't hurt to try laying on your left side and having them check it.

  • Thanks, Jen. I'll see how things go tomorrow and mention the position thing to my doc.
