Crib mattress -- recommendations??

Of all the things we have purchased for this baby, I am probably the most baffled by the crib mattress! I thought I had one picked out at BRU, but then I came home and saw that it didn't have the greatest reviews, so I am starting over. The selection is dizzying!! I really don't mind spending a little for good quality, especially with something like this, but at the same time I know it's almost never necessary to buy the most expensive of anything! I am trying not to stress over it because we don't plan to use the crib right away anyway, but at some point I am going to have to make a decision. Help!

Re: Crib mattress -- recommendations??

  • We went with Colgate as recommended by Baby Bargains.  It has two sides for adjusting firmness for infants and toddlers.  Not sure of the exact model.  Look for a high coil count.  HTH

  • So 5 yrs ago I bought a $50 kolcraft mattress from walmart for my ds. It still works great. It was firm when he was an infant. Now it's a little bouncy but he could care less. I'm not worried about the safety of it now. My point is I think this gets overthought a bit. As long as it's firm and fits in the crib that's the most important thing.

Haha, that's my thinking too. Babies fall asleep in all sorts of weird places anyway. I doubt they really notice their mattress very much. ;) So my only concerns when buying a mattress would be safety.

    It's a boy! Born 42 weeks, 2 days.

  • When we purchased our furniture at BRU, we grabbed a serta mattress and had my MIL test it out. She was literally laying down on the mattress in the middle of the isle haha! She said it was comfy, so I'll take her word for it. I picked up a different one off the rack to bring home though, just so I didn't have the one that an adult tested out haha!

    How nice of you.

  • Thanks everyone! Obviously safety is our main concern. I know the baby probably isn't going to care too much about whether or not his mattress has good reviews in other areas, so maybe I am overthinking it. It just makes me hesitate when a mattress with otherwise great ratings will have several reviews saying how bad it smells, or how noisy it is, etc. We live in a rural area--the nearest BRU is 2 hours away, the nearest Target 1.5 hours. We do have a Wal-Mart, but it is very limited in the baby department. We will more than likely be ordering the mattress online, and I really don't want to deal with the hassle of returning it if we end up with one we don't like!!
  • we're going with this mattress... it's got great reviews and stays sold out on Babies R Us, so it's in high demand. They're easy to find on Amazon though.

I got the Naturepedic mattress. Organic and waterproof. I got this recommendation from a few friends. Pricey but high quality.

    This. Also based on recommendations.
