Please come in if you had PUPPP

I am 35 weeks and just developed an intensely itchy pink rash on my tummy and now it looks as if it is moving to the sides of my breasts also.  It's ever so slightly raised just enough to feel textured, but not like breakouts.  And man is it annoying.  I had a friend with PUPPP recently and I am afraid that might be what it is.  She had hers in her stretchmarks but I don't have any stretchmarks on my tummy (yet...).

Anyway, I had my weekly OB appt this morning and the rash showed up an hour later Tongue Tied so I will need to call and ask about it tomorrow.  Anyone have something similar and what helped you find relief?

Re: Please come in if you had PUPPP

  • Yup, I had PUPPP with DD1.  It was awful.  It started around 32 weeks on my belly.  I didn't have any stretch marks at the time, but they came shortly after (don't think it was connected though).  It ultimately spread to my arms and legs.  I found a soap called Grandpa's Pine Tar soap that helped and I used it in the shower (smelled awful).  After I showered, I would slather myself in Noxema because the cooling effect felt good.  I tried everything, but that was the best combo I could come up with.  There is no way to get rid of it until you have your baby...and mine lasted three months PP but was much less intense.  I was so uncomfortable (couldn't sleep, itched all the time, etc.) that I asked to be induced after my EDD came and went, even though I had spent my entire pregnancy saying that inductions were out of the question.  Mine was bad enough that the post-partum nurses were shocked when they saw it.

I had it again with DD2, but it was confined to a small part of my belly and wasn't nearly as bad.  Incidently, the majority of cases occur to moms carrying boys, but I had two girls, so go figure.  PUPPP, coupled with the horrible heartburn I had with DD1 and the 41.5 weeks of vomitting and nauseau with DD2 are pretty much the reasons I won't bear anymore children Big Smile

It's pretty harmless to you and the baby, just makes you uncomfortable.  You do need to tell your OB and have them take a look at it because in very rare cases it can cause problems with your liver or kidneys (can't remember which one).  I had to have some blood work done just to rule out any issues.  Good luck and I hope you don't have it!

  • Awww PUPP...it was so evil! I had it at about 36 weeks and it went away after the baby came. I found that Aveeno oatmeal baths really helped along with Aveeno itchy skin wash. I also put Corizone cream on mine. It did show up in my stretch marks and was pretty gross. At night I would take Benadryl to help sleep. Good luck!
