xp: if you've had thrush - HELP pls

what did you use to treat it? what did you use to treat dc?i just started on diflucan today for 14 days and using triple nipple cream.how long will it take for the shooting/burning pains to subside?? also, I'm waiting on a call back from my pedi...they're going to decide whether or not to treat my dc but doesn't she need to be treated just in case she does have it and passes it back to me? tia!!

  • both LO and I had it when he was 3 weeks old. we were both treated with Nystatin- his were oral swabs and I had a cream. It cleared up in 7 days. HTH!

  • diflucan is what finally worked for us. It didn't even take the 14 days. My pedi said if its gone after 7 days you can stop then.

  • Our case was minor because we just happened to notice it a couple days before he had one of his routine check ups. He was on an oral Nystatin (per his Pedi) and I was prescribed "Dr Newman's Nipple Cream" (per by OBGYN). The nipple cream is made to order but most pharmacies say that they can make it as long as they are given the "recipe" which my OB provided them. Ours took just a couple of days.

  • Weve had thrush 2 times so far. We used nystatin at first and then switched to diflican because the nystatin did not work. And yes they really need to treat both of you if you are nursing! We had the opposite situation once (ds had it and i didnt) but they still had to treat both to prevent reinfection.

  • I've had thrush 3 times since LO was born.  The ONLY thing that finally worked for us (and this was after perscriptions failed since it came back) was GSE diluted in water (10 drops in a big cup of water 15 minutes before meals) and 5 drops in 2ounces of water dilution applied on the nipples after every feeding or every 1-2 hours.  It cleared it up and it hasn't come back.  The nystatin can cause yeast to become resistant to treatment FYI. GSE is safe for mom and baby.  I told another friend about it who suffered through many thrush infections and treatments and it cleared hers up too.  Twice a week I drink it as a preventative (some women are just more prone to yeast issues) and so far no thrush has come back.

  • when all else fails, gentian violet seems to do the trick.  It's messy- it stains your skin and baby's mouth purple but works way better than the prescription stuff. I got gentian violet 1% solution at Walgreens. The pharmacy had to order it, but its over the counter. I think it cost less than $10.

You apply it 2x/day for a week.

    Good luck!

  • We've both had it twice.

1st case - DD was prescribed oral nystatin (we had to swab the inside of her mouth 4 times a day for 10 days).  I was given diflucan, take one pill and then another 5 days later.

2nd case - DD was given a diflucan suspension to take once a day for 10 days.  I was again given the pills and then a nystatin cream to apply to my nipples after nursing.

knock on wood it's now been a while since the last case.
