KYRN

Can I ask you some questions?  I've been thinking about all of your scary ptl issues (how are you feeling, btw?!)

We are TTC and after having a bit of a scary first pregnancy, I can't help but wonder what it might be like if I have a second child...and I know, things can be totally different and I won't know until it happens..but I'm a planner...so..can I ask you some questions about your first pg and this one? If not, just ignore me :)

If so...

- Did you have ptl with Mark?  Were you ever diagnosed with an irritable uterus or anything?  Or is all of this new with this pregnancy?

- I had near constant BH, but was never put on anything to try and stop them (guessing because my cervix seemed to be holding out just fine).  What is the difference between BH and contractions that are concerning?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!!

I'm feeling ok at far are the ctx go.  I would say that I have was is considered pre-term ctx not labor b/c as far as I know they aren't changing my cervix at all.  I haven't been checked but the ctx first started around 24 weeks, they weren't too bad (not painful just noticeable).  I had them check a cervical length about 10 days or so after I started noticing them and it was very long (4.25cm) so I was ok with knowing that not really anything was going on, or least that they weren't doing anything.  I have monitored myself a few times at work and sometimes catch some irritability but for the most part none of the bigger ctx that I was feeling.

    - Did you have ptl with Mark?  Were you ever diagnosed with an irritable uterus or anything?  Or is all of this new with this pregnancy?  I basically had the same thing with Mark.  I was on procardia and although no one has used the term irritable uterus officially that is definitely what I have.  For some reason my anxiety over the whole situation is much worse this time, it has been from the beginning, I'm not sure why b/c I don't think it is worse this time.  I was electively induced with Mark at 38 weeks so all of the ctx never did anything.  My cervix was closed when everything initially happened with Mark and I had a cervical length u/s a few weeks after starting the procardia with him also and my cervix was long so I resumed normal activities (this was around 26 weeks).  I even flew to Miami with DH at 32 weeks (with Mark) and had no problems.  I was only 1cm at 36 weeks and then 3cm at 37 and 38 wks so I decided to just have them induce me (I had stopped procardia at 35ish weeks and never felt ANY ctx after 36 weeks).

    - I had near constant BH, but was never put on anything to try and stop them (guessing because my cervix seemed to be holding out just fine).  What is the difference between BH and contractions that are concerning?  BH are still contractions, but as long as they aren't doing anything then it is understandable that some Dr's might not take action.  I was glad to have the procardia, but I don't exactly take it as directed.  I sort of take it PRN.  I just take it usually in the morning and then after that if I feel like I'm having more ctx than I should be, or if I know I'm going to be more active than normal.  At my visit this week my dr asked how the ctx were and I said better, not totally gone though.  I do have some side effects from the procardia but nothing that isn't tolerable.  He said maybe I should come off the procardia and see how I do.  I sort of laughed and said I just take as needed anyway so I'll just keep doing that.  He just rolled his eyes at me (which is his usual response).

She isn't head down which also gives me some relief since there's really not pressure on my cervix.  I think deep down I know that even if I wasn't on the procardia I doubt that I'd be in full-blown pre-term labor, but taking the procardia slows things down so I stick with it.  It is very nerve wracking and I find it the most difficult b/c I'm not the average pt, and my Dr, who I'm also pretty close friends with has to determine what is a real complaint vs something his friend is whining about, and I see him 3-4 days a week at work so it's just different.  It's hard not to try to diagnose and treat myself.  The other day he commented that pregnancy isn't too good to me and maybe I should consider not doing it again.  I'm not sure if he's hinting that he doesn't want to do this again or not Wink.  He wasn't here for my first pregnancy.

I'm happy to answer any other questions if you think of something.

Thanks for taking the time to read this!!

  • Thank you!!  I really appreciate you answering my questions!  Sounds like your pregnancies are very similar to what mine was...I'm glad that the procardia is helping to manage the contractions (and your anxiety over them!) I think that if I have another, and if things start getting crazy, I will talk to my doc about possible meds.  It was really stressful last time, and I keep wondering if the fact that DS and I made it through a bloody, contraction-filled pregnancy to full term will help me feel more confident that my body can do it, or if I will feel like I'm pushing my luck that it will all work out ok if it happens again.

I had to laugh over your comments about your doc/friend..that definitely has to make things interesting!!  Are you hoping your little girl turns soon?  Did you deliver Mark vaginally?

    Thanks again!!

Yes it isn't the typical Dr/pt relationship, last night I txt him a picture of my cankles.  He also hears every little complaint that you might tell your friend but aren't serious enough to tell your Dr.

My Dr keeps telling me to be on my hands and knees to encourage her top turn but I'm sort of afraid that if she gets her big giant 90+%tile head down there too soon it may make things worse in terms of PTL.  I figure at 34weeks I'll start doing more hands and knees time to encourage her to turn if she hasn't.  I did deliver vaginally, only a 5 hour labor after they broke my water to induce me, so that's another fear that I'll labor super fast on my own and be on the news for delivering in my car!!  I have lots of irrational fears.

  • hmm..yes, your fears don't sound irrational to me at all!!  Having a fast labor the first time would totally make me have similar worries this time around!  (especially with all of the contracting ahead of time!)  I'm giggling over your little girl's "giant head"..ha!
