Intro and ?s about RNP

Hello,

I've been lurking for a while. We have a 3 1/2 daughter and twin girls on the way.

They did not have the rock n plays when DD was a baby, and I see that pretty much everyone loves it and has it or has to have it. My question is this, do you use it just as a bouncer or as an actual sleeper? I can see the babies taking naps in it, but not so much at night. It doesnt seem as safe or stable as a bassinet or crib. Maybe I'm missing something?

Re: Intro and ?s about RNP

  • I didn't want to use it at night since they aren't flat on their backs, but one of my LOs has reflux and is not comfortable on his back. The other LO didn't want to be in the PnP without his brother so they both sleep in the RnPs. We just use Noggin Nests in them because I had read that flat spots could be a problem with the RnPs.

ETA: I'm not sure why you think it would be unstable but if you have a specific question about that, I could try to answer it for you.

  • At first the boys would nap any and everywhere (boppies, swing, etc) and sleep in the RnP at night. Eventually they took all naps AND slept in them at night.

N moved to his crib right before 6 months, and E just moved to his a few weeks ago. Neither one of them had any problems with flat spots, but they both spent lots of time on their tummies while awake so I don't know if that contributed.

  • my girls slept swaddled in theirs for the first few months. We bought them when the girls were almost 3 weeks, and I don't know how I lived w/o them. They are incredibly stable, and I say this because my then 2 year old didn't get that he couldn't hang on sissies while in them. He used to stand on the locking mechanism. Scared the heck out of me and I couldn't always grab him before he did it. Once they could move we belted them in and tucked the blanket in around their legs.

We also never had any flat spot issues and there were many days where other than diaper changes DD2 never got picked up, DD1 was THAT needy until DH got home and I could hand of DD1 and get some DD2 time in.

I will also say I swear by fisher prices customer service. The locking mechanism broke on  one of the RNP's (most likely thank you DS!) and when I called to see about purchasing a new piece the rep said they'd cover it under warranty even after I explained what happened. They shipped me a new one for FREE at around 6 months old.

  • LOVE mine. Corbin sleeps in his, and both of his sisters have climbed in there (before he was born). They would be unable to knock it over or rock him out of it. I did get the Boppy Noggin Nest for his head, because I've heard of flat spot issues, and don't want to deal with a cranial band again. However, the new Rock N Play Deluxe edition has more head cushioning.

  • We used the RnPs at night until they were 6 weeks.  We used the RnPs by our bedside.  They were safe and stable.  The RnPs were easily accessible by the sides of the bed.  Plus, the incline was great since the babies had reflux.  We did not use the as bouncers.
U/S#1 showed 2 heartbeats! U/S#2 showed Baby A's heartbeat was 157 and Baby B 's heartbeat was 183! U/S#4 showed Baby A is a Boy (heartbeat 161) and Baby B is a Girl (heartbeat 159)!! Lilypie Second Birthday tickers

Yes both of mine have flat heads now and have to be evaluated for helmets tomorrow.  The slept in the RNPs for the first 6 weeks at home.

  • Mine slept in them overnight for the first 2 months after they were home, and DS has recently gone back to sleeping in his overnight (~12 hours) since he is rolling but not ready to give up his swaddle yet. No flat head issues here. We love them!
