Baby Names

Two "-er" boy names in a row?

Our LO's middle name will be "Christopher." It is DH's family tradition to use the daddy's first name as the middle name for the 1st born son and I love the tradition.

To say that we're struggling to come up with a first name that we both like is a huge understatement.  But we've finally found one name that I love and that he thinks he likes enough to consider, but it ends in "er".

We know that most of the time the LO's full name will not be spoken, but we're not sure what we think of having two "er" names in a row.  What do you guys think?

PS: I'm not including the possible name on purpose since we aren't telling our family and friends until the LO makes his appearance. I have a few friends who are pregnant, on thebump.com and if they see this post, will probably know its me.

Re: Two "-er" boy names in a row?

  • Well, to me it really does depend on what the first name is.  Just to let you know, my last name ends with -ers, and our twins names end in -er and -or, but I think it sounds fine.

Middle names are a little different, too, since they aren't said as often...so though it may not flow super well, I wouldn't worry about it as much.  (Unless he's going to go by his first and middle name all the time.)

  • I agree with pp that it probably depends on the name. I'm making up names in my head to see what I think.

Generally, I think I'm pretty lenient with flow. I think Carter Christopher sounds fine, as does Hunter Christopher...

Actually, the more I think about it, I don't think I'd have a problem with it at all.

  • I think it's fine. If it was two "doer" names, Archer Hunter for example, it would be overkill. But most of the names I can think of that end in er sound good with Christopher.

Funny you said "Carter Christopher" because that was one of the names we considered but ultimately ruled out because our last name starts with K - too many C and K sounds for our taste.

And I'm sorry, I know it would make it much easier to provide your thoughts if you knew the name, but I just can't post it here since it is a real possibility for us.  But I can tell you that the first name we are considering is two syllables.

  • I'm going through all the 2 syllable -er names I can think of in my head, and all of them sound fine with Christopher. I think if it were 3 syllables it could get to be a little much, but I'm gonna guess that it will sound perfectly fine.

  • We used Casey Christopher and I love it!  GL!  How about Kellan, Aaron or Nolan??

Thanks for the suggestions!!!  It is much appreciated!! But our last name starts with K and is very Irish, so we have ruled our all names starting with C or K - just too much C/K sounds for our taste.

As for Aaron and Nolan, while nice names, they aren't our style.

  • A 2 syllable "er" name would probably be okay ( except for Carter since you've already said that would be too many C/K sounds).  I think another 3 syllable name might be a bit sing-songy I do know a family that named their son  Tyler  with a two syllable "er " LN and I think it sounds weird. I also knowa ltitle boy named Jackson with another 2 syllable "son" LN and it definitely sounds weird.
