Blue nursery for a girl? Help!

So I just found out we're having a girl, which is awesome, but for some reason I had not really thought about at all! I had so many ideas for a boy nursery, but now that it's a girl? Um...huh.

Baby is going in a room which is already painted a grey-blue color I love. I feel like it could go boy or girl...but now I'm not sure how to girl it up in a way I like! We already have a crib which is cherry wood because hubby is NOT a fan of white furniture (which would be the easiest way to tint it girl). And I already have a gilder which is black. Which we could replace...but we already have it and I <3 free. We'll also throw in a cherry dresser with a changing pad on it. One wall of the room is all light tan bookshelves.

So. Given that. Um..how do I girl it up? I'm thinking sheets, changing pad cover, and art..but what? I am so *not* a girly-girl! Any ideas? Places to add some girl? Colors that would work? Any great websites (aside from Pinterest) for planning?

  • You can definitely girl it up! Do some purples or pinks in the bedding & art. We put our dd name on the wall in pink & purple. You could do some lacy stuff. There are a lot of things out there that would work

  • Our girl's room has aqua walls, cherry furniture, and pink/yellow accents.  I think pink and blue is a cute combination, given that it's the right shades.  I also like the yellow/blue combination for girls.

I spent a lot of time on the Project Nursery blog, too.  HTH!

ETA:  I think bedding and window coverings are an easy way to girl up a room.

  • Add lots of white in the wall art and decor.  I like the idea of adding some lace or crocheted pieces in white.  A really pale pink would be pretty too.

  • We don't find out until tomorrow what we are having but I have already got the paint for the nursery and it is a blue-gray color. My thinking is it will work with either I don't have anything else bought so if it is a girl I can use pinks, purples and white to accent because they will go great with the blue or if its a boy we can do the same with browns and greens.

  • Don't put blue and pink in it.....or purple....it will be too much and not cohesive.

Even though your furniture is cherry try and girl it up with white accessories and bedding that has feminine touches... Modernish ruffles, a girls white chandelier style lamp ( antique stores are great for these).

There is actually a fellow bumpie that posted an amazing navy and white girl's room recently....

  • My oldest daughter's room was painted blue when she was first born. (We have since moved.) It was apretty light blue, and her theme is celestial, so the main colors were blue, yellow, and green in her bedding. I decorated with pink, lavender, and yellow accents to girl it up and it was just fine. The glider we had at the time was even blue, and her room still was girly enough. You could do lavender or pink bedding, wall art, changing pad cover ,etc. and it will be fine. Have fun deocrating!

That was probably me! We're doing navy and white (with some dark wood, vintage accents). Here's the link to my thread with pics:

I totally agree PLUS to me curtains make the room! They are a HUGE impact feature on how the room feels so for me- I would start there.

  • try accents in yellow or red - ohdeedoh has great inspiration

  • I also putting baby girl in a blue room. I Love Love Love the color and want to keep it. I decided not to purchase bedding sets and just price things together on my Owen with a navy blue, white and black accent theme. My crib is from ds2 and is white. I am painting the dresser/changing table from natural wood to a great black milk paint I found and love. And I have a black armoir to use since the room has a small closet. I am going to sew a quilt for her when I find just the right fabric. I found a blanket and burp clothes on Etsey that served as my inspiration!

  • I'm NOT girly and I HATE the color pink.

If we had a girl, before DS. I was going with this yellow, tan, and white theme.

For DS we painted his room bright green for a monkey theme. If we had a girl this time (though it's another boy), then it would have stayed green. I would have added blue, yellow, and purple butterflies to the the room and done the same with the bedding.

With your bluish-grey room with cherry furniture. You could use purple, pink, yellow. I personally would use bright colors to girl it up since bright colors are more girly and bold colors are more boyish.

Use bright green, purple, yellow, etc.

I'd search JC penny, target, burlington coat factory, Carter's, and other baby stores for bedding ideas to match. I would like to see what you come up with. It sounds really interesting.

For your black glider, I would get a bright pillow to accent it. :)

  • Of course you can...

These RULES of colour are pretty irritating and CHANGE all the time.

So back in centuries past... BOYS wore PINK and girls wore blue. WHY?? Because red was for MEN and so pink (faded red) was for boys. It was too STRONG of a colour for girls.

But now.... pink?? Now pink is the weak colour and blue is the strong one??

Go for it... add whatever you feel looks good. Girls like blue! I am wearing a grey blue colour shirt now...I wear blue jeans... so why the heck not.

    Enjoy the blue!

  • Thanks, all! Ideas are great. I'm not too worried about things being blue...I jus tdon't want it to feel like a little boy's room! But I figure I picked the paint color and I love it and I'm a girl, so it's a girl's color, darn it! :-) I'll figure it out..might even be making my own sheets so I can find something I like!

  • DD's room is blue. We added pink and white stripped curtains, and girly funky flower art I found at TJ Maxx.
