We're waiting for signs that C is trying to escape the crib. Right now he is content to either sleep or spend his time throwing other things out of the crib when he is awake and waiting for us. He's becoming quite the climber so it may happen sooner than I originally thought.

We didn't switch til 3 when he was fully potty trained. He never tried to climb out and was an EXCELLENT sleeper in his crib. I was of the school of thought "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and decided since he was content, I wasn't rushing him.
Once we switched him, his sleep (mostly naps) went downhill. He still sleeps great at night but it takes him forever to fall asleep.
We just switched a few nights ago. DS is 21 months. He climbed out of the crib a couple of times, the second time falling on his face. We decided it was time to change. He's actually sleeping better now that we've switched.

We moved DD at 17 months. She's a climber and #2 is coming soon anyway. It went very well and she's sleeping great! She also waits to get out of bed until we get her.
Annalise climbed out of her crib at 22 months, so we switched to a twin bed then.
I hope to keep Charlotte in her crib longer than that... maybe to 3 years. She loves to climb on anything and everything, so most likely she'll climb out before that.

Today! I posted about this earlier, but she is 19 mo and was jumping out of her crib and wandering around the house. Bedtime was a little difficult tonight b/c she thought jumping in and out of bed was a great game, so I closed the baby gate on her room and sat close by until she finally gave up and laid down - about 15 - 20 minutes. She's sleeping soundly now - fingers crossed!
When we put him down in the evening he sleeps on his floorbed until he wakes up [it varied from around midnight to 4 am] and then I just bring him in bed with us because I am cold and lazy.
ETA: We had a crib, but never used it and just took it apart around 7 months old.
The triplets were a month or so over 3 years old. We had to put crib tents on at 18mo but those did the trick for a long time. It is hard, I would have waited longer if we could. They do not nap now...there goes 2 hours a day of peace. They trash their room every day, even when we took everything out they still find a way. Bed time is no longer as easy as a kiss goodnight. My opinion...wait as long as you can.

My preference is that we don't switch until potty training requires it. Obviously once he's going potty on his own, if we want him to do it at night, he'll need to be in a bed.
If he starts trying to climb out before that, I'll probably just get a crib tent. And if we have another child before he's ready to potty train (not likely since I'm not yet pregnant) then he may convert earlier.
We moved her a few weeks ago (22 months). She climbed out a few times when she was 19 months old and attempted multiple times after. We also will need to move DD#2 to the crib in a few months and I didn't want DD#1 to think we booted her from her bed. She transitioned with no problems and still sleeps 10-12 hours a night. She was fighting naps prior to the switch so it is fun to try to keep her in bed when she doesn't want to be there.
we skipped the toddler bed and went straight to a queen for dd. she was about 19-20 months old and had been napping on mats and cots at dc when she decided that she no longer wanted to sleep in her crib.

Re: XP- When did you switch to the TODDLER BED?
DS is still in his crib and I don't plan on switching him anytime soon.
