How to get 'basement' smell out of a bassinet?

Okay, it's a really weird question...but how do you get the 'basement' smell out of things?

We are using the bassinet my MIL had stored from my DH's daughter. It is about 4 years old and is in great shape (not to mention it saves us money) but the only problem is that is has been sitting in MIL's basement and has a 'smell' to it.

Not stinky...just musty maybe? It's hard to explain...

Anyway, I washed it really well and even took it apart and got to all the parts and pieces. This was a few months ago. I was storing baby blankets in it until I figured out where I wanted to put things. Well today I took the blankets out to put away and I noticed the smell is back and the blankets smell now too.

Ugh, I don't want to go out and buy a new one (for $100) but if I can get the darn smell out it would be awesome.

Any tips/ideas?

It is sitting in my room right now and I swear the weird smell radiating out from it...

  • Try baking soda/powder...you know the boxes you put in your fridge?  Put a box in the bassinet, cover it with a blanket or towel, to "close" it in and let it sit for a day or two or three.  Do that, then clean it again really good with some clorox wipes or something like that.  If that doesn't work, I don't think there is anything you can do other than giving it "time" to just air out.

  • Basement smell is usually moisture, I agree with PP recommendations. Also, if your climate allows leave it outside for the fresh air to get to it.

  • Ditto on the baking soda idea.

I bought a few things from consignment that had that "other peoples' basement" smell on it that I didn't notice in the store.  (eww!)  I ended up dousing the stuff with odor-eliminating lysol to disinfect & kill odors/mold/mildew.  It took a little bit of time for the lysol smell to go away too, but now everything smells fresh and clean.

Get it in the sun. The sun is the most powerful deodorizer we have...
