Does anyone do beverages in high chair only?

I give my son his milk to walk around with, watch tv with, etc....  Is this a bad habit?  Should I only give him milk in high chair?  One day he will be drinking from regular glass and I would definitely like him at table at that point, but I giess we are far away from that?

  • We let dd drink whenever and wherever. I would not want to deny her from drinking water. DD does have to drink more than most kids though, she takes meds that are placed in her milk and a supplement placed in juice so its just not realistic to make her sit and drink it since it happens about 6 times a day.

  • DD must be sitting when she drinks.  She can be in the high chair, on the couch, or in someone's lap, but I do not allow walking around with drinks.  I worry some about her bumping or falling on the sippy, but mostly I think it's not a great habit to start when, like you said, soon I hope to transition her to a regular cup.  She can have a drink whenever she wants (milk or water), she just has to sit down while she drinks it.

  • Milk and juice is in the high chair (unless we can't for some reason), but water is anywhere.  Like pp said, he likes to shake the cup so I don't want to worry about anything leaking out.

  • You haved a long way to go.  Only recently do we let my 4.5 year old DS drink from a regular "open" cup at meals.  When he is playing or having a snack at his kiddie table in the family room, he still gets a cup with a lid.

I let DD carry her cup around with her. She is not one to drink a whole cup of milk in one big gulp, it takes about an hour of sipping for her to finish it.

  • I just give her water in a straw sippy out of her high chair.  I just don't want milk everywhere!  I don't think it is a bad habit at all though.  I drink something constantly throughout the day so I don't see why she wouldn't want to.

  • I let Gavin walk around with his sippy cup.

  • Milk is high chair only. Water is anytime but, if they start flinging it and it starts dripping on the floor, clearly they aren't interested in drinking and I put them up for a bit.

  • We do milk only at table but they can carry a sippy cup of water throughout the house.

  • If they only do milk in high chair, do they drink enough milk?  My so drinks 3 9oz cups a day, but mostly walking around or sitting on sofa.  I worry if I only give it to him in high chair he will not get enough.  I am probably just paranoid.  Do you only offer it at meals if in high chair, or do you put them in randomly during day with it?

LO only gets milk in his highchair for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  3 x 4-5oz cups, that is how much his pedi said he should be having.  He eats plenty of cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese.  He has been drinking out of an open cup since about  15 months.  No sippys and very rarely straws, only if we are eating out somewhere but even then he normally just drinks out of a small open glass.  LO can have water when he wants it but his cup has to stay on the table and he can go sit down to have a drink.
