I can't figure this out! When DD latches onto my left side, she has no problems opening her mouth wide and getting to business. Her latch is "beautiful" (as the LC described it) and she eats happily. When she latches onto my right side, she just wants to play around with my nipple. I can almost never get her to open her mouth wide enough to get a good latch. As a result of the bad latch, I am having a lot of pain (a small blister?) when she nurses on the right side. She doesn't seem bothered by the bad latch and eats just as happily on the right as she does on the left.
Any suggestions for me to help her latch better or to deal with the pain? I've tried hand expressing some milk before she nurses in case the problem is that it's too engorged for her. I've also tried switching to a football hold so she's still eating on her left side (like she does when she latches on the left breast).
Re: bad latch on one side only?
DD like my left side bette & latches better there too. I've found that sometimes I have to open her mouth with her chin & put the nipple in her mouth. That way she is open wide enough. That usually helps.?
She also may just latch differently. As long as she's not bothered, you're not in pain & she's not getting air, I'd say she's probably fine.?
Good luck. ?
Two things, your hunch about supply higher in one side might be correct, my DS always latches worse on my bigger supply side. Try expressing even more milk to make sure that's not it.
Otherwise, if I had to guess I'd say its that she's a bit out of alignment. cranio sacral or chirpractic is great for that!
