Post delivery question for those who have done it already

I'm just wondering about the afterbirth situation. I know it's way too early to be worrying about what to pack for the hosp but I'm more just curious as to how to go about it. I'm wondering if anyone bought underware that they were ok with getting ruined instead of wearing their "good undies" in the hosp. I know they give you pads and all that but as I'm sure we all know sometimes they don't do the trick like they should. Yes I know this is a ridiculous thing to think about but that's just the kinda gal I am. TIA!

Re: Post delivery question for those who have done it already

  • I brought underwear I didn't care about getting ruined.  Though for the 12-24 hours after birth, I had to wear the mesh hospital ones with ice packs...I had third degree lacerations and an episiotomy.

  • Last time I bought some black Hayes boyshort underwear - highly recommended!  Extra coverage for those gigantic pads they give you.

  • I used the mesh boyshorts they give you for the first 12-24 and honestly they were pretty comfy you really don't want any extra pressure or anything binding but...after that I had some boyshort undies that were a God send for those diaper like maxies. I bought them in red FYI..

  • I wore the mesh ones as long as possible because they were actually pretty comfy. All of my underwear are black, so I just went back to wearing those afterward.

  • I rocked the mesh panties until discharge day and then I wore some panties out of a hanes 6 pack (i am not a 6 pack girl...love VS...so i didnt care of they had to get tossed)

Most postpartum rooms will have 2-3 pad options for various bleeding.  the 1st 24 hours you will probably use mesh panties and the 'diaper' pad which covers from belly button to the top of the crack (lol).  The next option is thinner, but long and is like an extra super pad.

I also brought stayfree overnight pads to use on discharge day because they offer great protection but are thinner so you dont feel like you are leaving in a diaper...plus my bleeding became more manageable that day

I never leaked using hospital pads...but you will need to learn how to shower and dry off and get a pad on in 30 seconds before you drip blood

  • Loved loved loved my fish net, mesh "overly fashionable" boy shorts that the hospital gave me. LOL. Well, they aren't cute, but they were comfy. (I really liked that they fit good but weren't super tight with the elastic that made things fell not so great) They give you huge pads and my nurses stuffed them with ice chips (felt amazing after delivery). So, I would say that you could take some that you aren't too concerned about, but don't be surprised if you don't wear them after the baby comes.

  • I wore the hospital provided ones for the first week. After the first week my bleeding subsided to a normal period and by week 3 I was in just a panty liner for small leaks. By 4 weeks I was done bleeding completely and released by the doctor. Everyone is different but definitely wear undies you are willing to part with! Also I went up a size to wear just for extra comfort, I didn't want anything being tight down there.

  • Crying I don't want to even think about this! I hate my period because I hate feeling so 'messy' down there and leaking and getting clothes/underwear messed up.

Between the ice packs and the numbing spray they give you even with an episiotomy it's not awful feeling. It would hurt without all that stuff but they do a good job of making mom comfy! Plus if your dr is as good as mine he gives me good pain meds!

  • I agree with the mesh undies. Lifesaver when it came to my c/s. I didn't want ANY pressure on my incision and they were perfect. Going home, I wore an old pair that I didn't care about. This time around, I plan on the 6pk, like pp suggested. I wouldn't normally wear them so it doesn't matter if they get messy. Although all the heavy bleeding was done within a few days.

  • Thanks ladies this is super helpful, especially knowing that they gonna make me stick ice down my pants and the time restraints on getting dressed after the shower. It's just stuff you don't know until you go through it or think to ask someone that has gone through it.

  • While the mesh were comfortable, they didn't keep my pad in place so I had a lot of full change/bed change situations in the hospital.  This time I am getting Depends.

In 3rd tri I had bought new, cheap undies a size up anyway (I like Old Navy b/c they don't have a tight waistband) so I wasn't heartbroken when they got ruined in the pp weeks.

  • I bought some "trash" panties, but like others have said, those mesh panties are awesome.  I had a C/S, but still bled a lot.  So, for me it wasn't about not putting pressure down there, but they are super comfy and great for holding those gigantic pads.  That's what they gave me to wear, and I never took the trash panties out of my suitcase...I actually wore the mesh panties home.  The trash panties were good for the following days after I got home, though.
  • I asked for as many extra mesh undies as they would give me and wore them as long as they lasted, probably 3-4 days at home.  I bled for 7 weeks with DD, so I wore 6 packers after that.

  • I loved the mesh undies they give you. So much so I got extra packs after DD2 was born. I lived in those the first couple weeks after each and then switched back to normal undies.

  • The first few days in the hospital, then gave me these awesome mesh ones.  Then the 4th day, I got these crappy mesh ones where the elastic was too tight on my c-section scar.   I was so in love with the original ones, that I brought them home to wash and use there.  I actually saved them for baby #2, just in case they don't have the good ones next time.  I know it's weird, but they came perfectly clean.

I think I used those hosptial ones for the first week or so.  They stayed up and held the pad in place, without being too tight.

  • I had a c-section and sported the lovely mesh panties until it was time to go home.  I also kept the gown on because I didn't want anything rubbing my incision.  This time around, I will probably bring some granny panties that I don't mind getting ruined so I can be sure the panties will come above my incision.

  • Depends disposable underwear. Nothing gets ruined going that route!

  • I wore the mesh ones in the hospital and just brought older undies I didn't care about for the trip home.  I would advocate taking all of the mesh undies and super-pads they give you.  They really do work better than anything else.

I totally did this too!  I have like 3 or 4 pairs at home and plan to take home every pair I can get my grubby little hands on in the hospital!  They actually washed up really nice and nothing was better for my c-section incision!

This for me too unfortunately!  I brought comfy stuff from home but just ended up wearing hospital gear.

  • The hospital will likely give you mesh undies that you can put the ice pack pad thing in and then throw away when they get ruined. They are a godsend. :)

  • I LOVED those mesh boy shorts so much, I am already thinking about how I can get my hands on some. I am having a homebirth this time and will stock my own pads, etc. I like Natracare, but that is because I am a lunatic who doesn't like the plastic bleached pads. For my regular periods I use cloth so I may get some of those. But where can I get some of those mesh panties???
