Uggh...freaking out about nail polish remover...

I know I'm an excessive worrier, so I could really use someone to give me a kick in the pants right now...

My dr told me that I could continue getting manicures during my pregnancy, so before the holidays I got a shellac manicure, like I usually do.

Now, a couple of weeks later, I wanted to try taking the polish off without going back to the salon, so I tried soaking my fingertips in remover, as well as holding cotton balls soaked with remover on my nails for a few minutes. I did this partly in the bathroom (with the fan on) and partly in my bedroom.

The whole process was long and tedious, and prob took the better part of 45 minutes (off and on). After doing one hand, I actually decided to take a break and run out to the grocery store, and since I was there anyway I picked up an acetone-free polish remover, which I used on my other hand.

Anyway, I know nail polish is supposed to be relatively safe while pregnant, but i'm just concerned because I had to use so much of it over an extended period of time. Can anyone set my mind at ease about this?

  • BTW, just in case it's not clear, shellac nail polish is extremely hard to take off...hence why it took me so long to do...

  • No worries! I just spent the last hour removing old nail polish, and re-painting my nails. As long as you were in a well ventilated area you are fine!

  • You will be fine.  I know it is easy to freak out about every little thing, but there unfortunately bigger more scary things we are going to have to deal with.  Try to relax, I know it is easier said then done, but really you will be just fine.

I super glued my fingers together last week and needed to use acetone to remove the glue.

  • Women employed in nail salons work throughout most of their pregnancies exposed to nail polish and polish remover every day and have perfectly healthy babies.

I know it's hard, but try not to worry so much about every little thing. Smile

It is actually easy, you just have to buff off the top coat then soak.

This. I would go early in the day before the fumes get crazy, but you are totally fine. You can have a manicure all the way through your pregnancy.

  • No way!  You may want to call your OB. Your baby may be growing a couple extra fingers with painted fingernails.
