Re: Vivian or Vivienne

  • Vivian.  Less letters.  Simple.  Also I would pronounce Vivienne as Viv-ee-enn.

  • Vivienne!!!

    This was actually at the top of the list for DD's name when she was born- I love the French spelling, it adds a touch of elegance and class.  My middle name is Jeanne- and even though the name is common, the spelling has set it apart in so many situations.  It really made my name more special overall. (IMHO)

    :)

     My daughter just wasn't a Vivienne when we saw her though.... :)  She's a Cadence through and through...

     ETA: Also, you can just call her Vivi for short if you're concerned about her spelling it.  :)  Our girl is learning to write Cady before her full name...

  • I always thought Vivienne was a prettier spelling.  My friend named her daughter Vivian and it grew on me more.  Also, when I was pregnant my grandmother informed me that her middle name was Vivian. (Can't believe I didn't know that after 29 years of knowing her.)  She always dropped hints that I should name my daughter Vivian after her, but we ended up having a boy.  Sadly, she passed away in January and now Vivian is definitely on our short list eventhough one of my closest friends named her daughter that.

  • I also think they are pronounced differently. To me:

    Vivian = VIV-ee-un

    Vivienne = vee-vee-ENN

    I prefer the way Vivian looks and sounds.

  • I prefer Vivienne. I don't really have a reason why honestly, I just do.

  • I agree with PP that Vivienne has a nice touch of class to it.  Not confusing to read, but also more unique, too:)

  • We're going with Vivienne because my husband's last name is French, so I think it flows better and looks prettier.

    It could be pronounced differently (Vivienne = viv-vee-Enne, Vivian = VIV-ee-un), but for all practical purposes, people around me say it the same way.

  • I have been hooked on Vivienne. It seems so elegant and beautiful. Vivian seems more old-lady to me.

    I prefer Vivian, but if your last name is French, definitely do Vivienne. Plus, the french pronunciation is gorgeous!!!
