Circumcision clicky

We did not circ DS. We had intended to before having him, but decided against it in the hospital. DH is circ'd and had the procedure done when he was older.

My sister came over the other day and changed DS's diaper. She couldn't believe that we didn't have him circ'd and said it was "gross" if we didn't do it. She also said he would be made fun of in school (which DH did confirm happens, but it still wasn't a strong enough reason for us) Before DH, I was with BF's who weren't circ'd and didn't care or think it was gross (but my sis said she would never be with someone who wasn't circ'd). I really am just not comfortable with removing a part of my son's genitals for cosmetic purposes - I don't think it's my decision to make. If he wants it done when he's older, he can have it done.

Anyway, got me wondering if my kid will be the *only* one not circ'd when he gets older. Did you circ your son?

Re: Circumcision clicky

  • We did circ. both our boys, however I don't think it's nice for people to comment that not doing so "is gross". It's completely up to the parents, and either way is perfectly fine IMO. I wasn't strongly for or against having it done, so since DH did feel more strongly about getting it done, I was fine with that.

  • We didn't circ our son. DH is, but we didn't find it a necessary procedure. Apparently that really surprised our hospital, because my OB congratulated us for  taking the time to research and make an informed decision. I guess in my area, it is the norm to have it done and people don't really question why. As PP mentioned, rates of circumcision are dropping, so not being circ'ed will become more common.

  • I don't know why I didn't do this before, but I just looked up National and Provincial circumcision stats for Canada. The data is from 2006/2007, so I wonder if/how things have changed since then.

Nationally, Canada has a circumcision rate of 31 % (way lower than I would have thought). Provincially, there are some provinces/territories that recorded zero circumcision during that year, and the Province with the highest rate (Alberta) is still only 44 %.

Interesting. Not that it matters to me one way or the other (I'm still not having DS circ'd), but I guess I just thought he'd be the odd man out. I guess not.

  • We opted not to circ. Our research and doctors comfirmed our suspicions that it is a cosmetic procedure, and we couldn't find any reason to do it. I think it is not going to be uncommon at all when our boys are undressing in the locker room.

  • We did, but I had a mild freak out at the hospital before it was done. Harry wasn't cleared for the procedure until he was 4 days old and I just got really scared b/c he was born early and was in the NICU.

DH really wanted it done and I asked him if he had any animosity towards his parents for making the decision for him (he is circ'd), and he said no, and that he was very glad his parents made that decision for him.

I was still weary of doing it, but we got it done. Harry did great and never seemed to be in any pain so I don't regret it one bit now.

I had a really hard time with the decision too. DH really didn't feel strongly one way or the other, so I felt like it was on me to say "yay or nay". Maybe it was the hormones, but after he was born, I just couldn't give him up to the doctor to have the procedure done.

I guess I just figured that you can't undo a circumcision, so my rationale was better to leave it intact and have DS do what he wants with it. I don't judge anyone who circ's their DS - it's such a personal decision. After all, it was my intention to circ until the eleventh hour.

  • I filled out the clicky as I did, but that is because my 4 day old son is.  My 10 yr old and 8 yr old are not.  They were born preemie and I didn't want to put them through anymore.  Both boys have told me there are other kid in their class that aren't but not very many.  No one has made fun of them though.

  • I voted ss because we were team green but had a girl. We had decided not to circ though. It was a hot topic and hard decision though. We live in an area where most people are, and dh felt weird about not doing it.....but neither of us could find a compelling enough reason to do it either. I literally cried for weeks over the decision. Lol

  • We did because it was something DH felt strongly about. I don't think it's gross to not circ though and have read that eventually it will be the norm to not be.

  • We did it because, given DS's kidney issues, it was medically recommended.  He was born with dilated kidneys and he can't risk getting a UTI as a baby.  We were going to do it anyway though.  My nephews aren't circ'd and DH and I agreed we didn't like that.

  • Ours isn't yet... but probably will be.

Our hospital doesn't do circumcisions - you have to go to their pediatrician - and because of the holidays the earliest appointment we could get was the beginning of January! Originally I thought I'd want him to be circed, but now that we have to wait until he's 3 weeks old and I've thought more about it, I don't want to anymore. DH, however, does, so we're keeping the appointment... but if DS is more than 10 lbs by his appointment they won't do the procedure, so it may be out of our hands.

  • Although I had a girl I voted "yes." If we ended up with a boy we would have had him circ'ed. I left the decision up to DH. He is circ'ed and would have wanted his son to be also. Yes, it is a cosmetic procedure but it is important to DH. That was good enough for me.
  • We are still waiting on our lo, but we decided not to. DH is, but that wasn't a compelling reason for us. We couldn't find enough of a medical benefit to justify the procedure. I am concerned that he will be different from classmates, but it's more acceptable to not do it these days than when our husbands were in school.

  • We did because we didn't want him to have to deal with it later on.  Our friend from Germany was not and ended up having to because of infections, he was 8 and it haunts him to this day.  I understand your feelings but it has health benefits which it why we chose to.

I guess it's like any medical procedure - sometimes they go smoothly, sometimes they don't. DH was circ'd when we was older (10, I think) as well because of an infection, and he said it was NBD. It didn't traumatize him at all. Sucks that your friend had a bad experience.

  • We did it. I was on the fence and DH was very pro-circ. I was so worried I stewed about it all night the night before. The procedure wasn't nearly as big of a deal as it is made out to be. In the end, I am so happy with the decision to get it done and will definitely get it done with any future sons if it comes up.

DS got it done at a urology office at 2 weeks old. I wouldn't be comfortable with it if we were not at a specialist.
