2 topics for discussion

1. I went to Walgreens to get my flu shot and aparently they don't offer the kind that is preservative-free and is more recommended for pregnant women. I asked the pharmacist where I could get the right kind and he said call my GP. I did call, but the office is closed until next Tuesday for the holiday. Sigh...Has anyone here ever heard of the preservative vs. preservative-free flu shots?

2. I called and went to the two local daycares that offer infant care. They both sounded good and very similar on the phone. But when I arrived - I got a bad ...or at least not good feeling from both. I am now horribly depressed about the state of childcare in our area. One place reeked of bleach which means they did cleanup with harsh chemicals midday rather than working later after the babies/kids went home. It was very cramped/close space and had Lady Gaga blaring in the room where the 1yr olds were trying to nap. The other place had the worst security. I went in, the kiddie door was open to let anyone into where the kids were, waited awhile and sat down before anyone even check - Facebook was open on the computer at the front desked the front office area. When I got a tour I saw 4 yr olds unattended, one teenaged attendant was outside on her cell phone.

Re: 2 topics for discussion

  • 1. I got my flu shot last week when I saw my doc. Everything is in the same place since it is a HMO. I did have to sign a form and check I was pregnant. It did say something about it being different, just not sure I remember the right language.

    2. Sorry about the bad experiences with Day Care. We have not starting looking too much yet, but I hope you will be able to find something better.

  • 1.  Yes, the same thing happened to me. They give pregnant women a thimerosol free flu shot.  I couldn't find one at any Walgeens or CVS near my house and my doctor is no longer giving them. I am bummed....guess I shouldn't have waited until second trimester.

     2. I had a similar experience looking at places for my daughter. I ended up finding a wonderful in home day care provider.  I toured six different places and signed up for one before my daughter was born and then after I had her decided it wasn't good enough and found the person I consider her second mother! Don't give up...you will find something.

  • 1. Yes, I heard about this because where I work would not give the shot to pregnant woman. I asked my doctor about it last month and was able to get my shot there.

    2. That is definitely not good. I hope you find some better places soon.

  • 1. My employer offers flu shots on-site (it's a hospital). They offered two options, the shot and the nasal swab. The nasal swab was not recommended for pregnant women but the shot was fine. I have not heard of there being two different shots to choose from. HTH!

  • 1. My employer also had a free flu shot day.  I had only just found out I was pregnant, and was not quite 6 weeks.  They said it was no problem, and that I would just get the preservative free shot.  Mine came out of a cooler.  Since it was the first time I had ever gotten a flu shot, they made me hang out for 10 minutes to make sure I wouldn't have a negative reaction, but they made everyone who had never had one before do that.

  • 1. I believe I received the normal flu shot. If what I've read is accurate, both are ok for pregnant women but they prefer to give the preservative-free to pregnant women, as there's a slight slight chance of m/c. I also believe the risk is really only present in 1st tri, but I welcome more informed people to correct me. (I did a bit of research after being nervous about getting the preservative shot).

    2. Sorry about your daycare experience!! Keep looking and don't settle. We'll be undergoing the same process soon. Ugh.

  • I got my flu shot the day I went in for confirmation of my pregnancy.. I think they had it ready and waiting for me before I even got there because I'd barely sat down and she was comin at me with the shot.. I only thought there were two kinds.. the nasal and the shot.

One of us will be a stay at home parent. Him in the beginning and possibly long term. I want to get my CNA while I'm on maternity leave and hopefully get a decent job at a hospital then advancing from there. If we decide to move to his home country I'll be the one at home with the baby but that's not looking feasible at all so I'm not even really contemplating it.

  • 1. I am a pharmacist [not retail though so this is not my forte anymore]) and looked at the CDC website. The CDC did not make mention specifically of using a preservative free flu shot for pregnant woman. (If your place has, then great.) Only NOT to use the intranasal spray in pregnancy since it is a live vaccine (versus the injectable with is dead).

    2. I dread starting to look into daycare. Do you need to start this soon?

  • I worked in a (supposedly) really good, expensive daycare as a kindergarden teacher for four years.  One time I was asked to step in in the infant room after school b/c they were short a staff person.  12 babies ages 6 weeks to 1 year.  There was a little 6 week old baby, just arrived and brand new to the center.  She was in a "bouncy" seat, recliner thingy, and she was crying.  The staff person in the room told me to give her her bottle, so I picked up the baby to feed her.  The staff person told me to put her down, because (and I am exact quoting here) "she will get used to being held".

This was a 6 week old baby, and this was not a Russian orphanage!!

I don't know where you are, but in my area Doodlebugs is a pretty good center if you can afford it.  There are camera's in every room, and you can check in any time you want on your computer and actually watch what is happening in the room, plus the staff are held at pretty high standards.

If I were you, I would write the director of each daycare center and let them know what you didn't like about their centers. That way, it is brought to their attention if they don't already know, and will realize it is driving away clients. I know I appreciate feedback regarding my employees, whether it is good or bad.

  • My Dr. offers flu shots and does not use the thimerosol free kind either - they offer the multi-use vial kind - which is the kind with thimerosol.  She said it is safe for pregnant women.

  • 1. CVS gave me the preservative-free but both are fine.  My doctor ran out before I could get it there.  The pharmacist @ CVS was great.

    2.  We haven't started that process yet but I have heard some horror stories.  Keep looking and never settle.  Something will pop up.

  • I am going to a pediatrician next week for my preservative free flu shot. They were recommended by my obgyn. Just a thought, maybe somewhere near you has some left.
  • 1.  I've forgotten to ask about a flu shot at every appointment I've had so far...I would definitely get the one recommended for pg women vs. the regular one.

    2.  If you have a bad feeling about a place (and who wouldn't from what you described, that's crazy and I feel so bad for the kids there) you should definitely go with your gut.  However, you may want to re-visit after the holidays because I'm wondering if they are short-staffed/have relaxed rules re: music, computer use etc. since it's the day before a holiday weekend?  But, the security thing would definitely freak me out too.

  • 1.  I got the preservative free flu shot at my OB's office.  Try calling your OB and see if they offer it.

    2.  I would keep searching for better options.  Definitely would say no to the second place!!  I wonder how some of these places get any business??  It might be worth it to drive a little further to get better quality care.
