I've had one (I was having some contractions and she wanted to see if anything was happening), but my dr. tries to avoid them unless there's a reason to check (like having contractions, or losing your MP, etc.). I think it's pretty normal not to get checked until close to your due date, if at all, depending on your dr.
I didn't do them at 37 weeks because not much action was showing up on the non-stress test. Going to DR tomorrow and still won't do it unless the DR really wants to do it. Everything I've read says the results don't necessarily mean it's going to rush it along.
As long as there are no problems or concerns, my clinic doesn't do them at all until you think you're in labour, or far enough past your due date that they have to induce you. They will if you ask, but its not routine at all places, which I consider a good thing!
