Babies: 0 - 3 Months

those of you that have dogs...thinking about a few months from now

We have a dog. She sheds. WTH will I do in a few months when DS is on the floor playing and crawling and biting everything in sight? For instance, baby has a toy and slobbers on it, drops it on the floor, picks it up and puts it back in his mouth?? OMG I have no clue what to do. There is no possible way to keep the floor that clean with a dog in the house. I am not a first time mom but it has been 12 years since I had my DD. What do you all think?

Re: those of you that have dogs...thinking about a few months from now

  • It's an awful dilemma.  We have a beloved 12yo lab who is so awesome with DS but -ugh- I never realized how dirty it was to have a dog in the house until I had a baby. I'm worried about toys, cleanliness, etc too.

  • try a dog and 4 cats.

I put a blanket down before I put DS down on the floor. When DS is not on the blanket, the blanket has to come off the floor b/c the dog and cats will lay on them.

They do have their own blankets that are separate and stay on the backs of the furniture and on the bed, though. So they will stick to that as long as a baby blanket is not left out for them to lounge on.

I really don't know what I'll do when DS gets more mobile. We haven't come to that bridge yet.

  • We have a lab that sheds like crazy.  Even though we vacuum all the time, there's still hair everywhere.  When we first brought DD home I was neurotic about the hair.  I hated that it was on her blanket, her burp cloth and in her RnP.

Well, now that DD is 5 months....I'm much less worried.   Even when we put her blanket away after using it on the floor, it always has hair on it.   DD's clothes always has dog hair on them.   I've given up being psycho about it.

No matter how much we clean, there will always be dog hair.   I'm just happy that our pup and baby are great together.

This. Our lab sheds like crazy. I have a dyson and vacuum daily. The dog gets regular baths and doesn't have fleas, etc. He only goes in our yard and where we allow him on a leash. DS will play on a blanket when he's on the floor. It's not a big deal. Germs happen .
  • Maybe try one of the play gates that are set up in a circle type shape?? Then LO can play and you can vacuum under it so there is no dog hair!

You . . . go about your day. A little dog hair isn't going to kill your kid.

If this is keeping you up at night, you may want to break out the bubble your kid is going to live in now. That way, when he's born, you can just drop him right in.

Nice dog. Looks almost exactly like mine. Pitbull? Anywayyyy...

Obviously it's not going to kill my kid. I'm not an idiot and I've had dogs since I was a kid myself. I don't mind so much my child having dog hair ON him, it's IN his mouth that totally grosses me out. I hate when I get hair in my own mouth so I guess that's why it makes my skin crawl. Btw, my "kid" is already born.

  • i have a husky and a malamute. i'm pretty sure DS has ingested a LOT of dog fur already. not much i can do about it. i vacuum constantly and keep everything as clean as possible but there's only so much you can do! i agree with pp...a little dog fur won't hurt your DS.

  • I agree with PP's. It's just going to happen if you have pets, you'll have to get over it. I've got a dog and 3 cats, and plan on having more animals when we move to our bigger house (shh, don't tell, but I'm already breaking the city animal # law - oops!).

The cats share the same blankets, and I've had to pull hair off of DDs pacifiers. I'm not too concerned about it now, because obviously when she is mobile it'll be just uncontrollable.

DD will always obviously come first, but there will never be a point in my life that I'll be animal-less which means, pet hair everywhere.

  • When DD was first on the floor doing her thing, we tried to put down clean blankets and keep her on them and the dogs off of them (we have 2 golden retrievers, so hair is inevitable).  we gave up on that and we just learned to deal with it and if she got hair in her mouth, we got it out.

  • Vacuum, swiffer, sanitize his toys regularly and if you're that concerned keep the nursery dog-free for play time when you don't feel like cleaning up beforehand.  He'll be putting everything in his mouth; a little dog hair won't kill him.
  • So if dog hair in his mouth grosses you out, WTH will happen that first time he takes off his diaper and plays in his own poop? I have two Beagles (both indoors) as well as a Pomeranian (obv indoors) and yeah, hair happens. My pom sheds like crazy but I will do my best cleaning and wipe hair out of his mouth if I see it. Lord knows I have probably eaten a ridiculous amount of dog hair.

  • Try not to worry about it. Research has shown that children who grow up with pets have better immune systems and are less likly to have allergies. We have two cats, and one dog. One of the cats is super fluffy, I mean fluff everywhere! We just sweep every day or other day, and things are fine. As for dog slober it hasnt killed anyone yet to my knowledge, so don't worry.

  • You develop a deep meaningful relationship with the broom and mop! I started "no dog" area. They are not allowed upstairs so the hair is limited to the lower floor. I also got diligent about brushing them to keep the loose hair to a minimum.

  • Vacuum a lot! I know it sounds simple, but if we vacuum daily we rarely have any hair in the bin (we have 2 shedders)! Also, when I babysit I block off the play room with a baby gate and the dogs are not allowed in there. Bottom line: if you have an indoor dog, you know it isn't that dirty! If LO gets a little hair in his mouth he will be okay!

What the heck? I don't think this is a regular thing that happens to everyone.

  • I found that as LO got more mobile I got more relaxed about what went in her mouth.

At first I controlled everything that went into her mouth.

Then she started being able to grab stuff.

Then she got mobile so she could go find her own stuff to put in her mouth.

As each phase arrives you naturally relax a bit more, which i think is all part of the process of LOs building their immune systems.

Now my LO is a walking disaster of disgustingness. She kisses the dogs, shoves her hand in her dirty nappy, eats food off the floor etc etc etc.
