Scary checkup

So I took my kids (I have a 8 year old and a 9 year old)  with me today hoping that I would get an u/s and they could see the baby, and was told that they don't actually do them there, they just listen for the heartbeat. That's cool.. the kids can still hear their baby sibling's heart and we'd be on our way. She said due to my age she wanted me to go get a more in depth anatomy scan and should do it between 17 and 20 weeks. Again I was ok with that.. sooner the better. :) Then there's some talking about my recently swelling feet and the nifty new hive breakout that's still there but is fading (she thinks it's an allergic reaction and recommended Benadryl)

So then we get to the good part... she gets the doppler out and goes hunting for Bunny. She has a hard time finding him (or her) and says she's going to go get a different machine. I'm starting to get a little nervous but she comes back with a newer looking machine and she says this one's much better! She starts looking and still can't find anything. She's saying she's hearing it kick but I can't hear anything and I'm starting to wonder if she's going to tell me my baby's dead in front of my kids and start quietly praying that she will at least give me some warning so I can send them out to the waiting room first.

She stops and says she's going after the ultrasound machine and when she leaves I tell the kids the baby's being stubborn and she's going to get a the tv so we can see it. I'm actually dreading this part by now and take a deep breath when she puts the wand on my stomach and I can see the baby.. on it's back. Then it rolls over and I swear it waves at us. I was so relieved I almost started bawling. They were so frickin cute saying hi to the baby and waving back at it.. :) She printed a bunch of pics out and gave one to each of them. Phew.. what a day..

  • So glad to hear everything is OK!  That happened to me about 3 weeks ago, but my doctor was quick to note that her doppler is crappy and immediately ushered me to the ultrasounds when that room freed up.  Still, that feeling of OMG is not good, no matter how short-lived it is!

  • I'm so glad everything went okay, even after the scary part! I can hear the baby moving on the doppler (it's a big swoosh sound), so when I hear that, I know everything's okay. My LO hates the doppler and will move any time it feels the pushing of it.
