Weight gain?

How much have you gained during this pregnancy. My doc told me to gain only 15 lbs....I passed that a long time ago. She gives me a really hard time every time I go in and I really dread it. Also, to top things off, she is just dry and unpleasant overall. I am healthy, baby is healthy and I KNOW I will lose the weight when baby is here. I lost over 70 lbs before baby and now have gained 40 but I am not going crazy on bad food but I am not dieting either. I know baby is getting the nutrients he needs and I am not worried. Her only argument is that postpartum will be more difficult. Anyone else experiencing this? How much is too much?

Re: Weight gain?

  • I am pushing 40. I was supposed to stick with 25-35. My dr hasn't said a word about it.

  • I'm 5'11" And was 165 and very in shape pre-preg. I haven't really worked out since I got pregnant besides taking walks, and no dieting here, just eating like I would if I wasn't pregnant (which I guess is bad since I don't work out like I used to haha). But last week I weighed 206. My doc has no problem with it and I've had absolutely no problems with baby. I'm sorry you're having a rough time with your OB! I'm sure you'll be fine, especially after losing 70 lbs! That's awesome. :)

  • I've gained about 30. Originally I was told to keep it around 20 but they haven't said anything at my appointments.

  • I've gained 33, my doctor is okay with that. I gained 39 and lost it all with my first.

this- if you know in your heart that you are eating right and getting exercise I wouldn't get excited about it...as for your doc, well i might let her know that her lectures aren't helpful and that you are doing all you can

  • I have gained about 30 and my doctors don't say anything. My nurse actually said I was lucky to be pregnant during the holidays because I have an excuse for weight gain! By the way I was overweight to start with, so I expected to get crap, but they have been nice.

  • Some doctors do that.  A friend of mine had a doctor that would get really upset with her if she gained too much weight and made her eat less and work out which I think is crazy.  My doctor just tells me that whatever I put on I have to take off after I have the baby and its my decision. I have gained about 40 which seems to be the average and luckily she has never lectured me about that stuff.

I agree and would just tell the doctor that you understand but it is what it is and if you know your baby is getting what it needs that is all that matters.

  • Thank you all so much! I have been feeling really down about it. I have no doubt that I will lose it all when LO is here!!
  • I am around 12 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight (18 from my lowest pregnancy weight). Dr is happy with this and wanted me to stick around 20ish since I was a little... curvy to begin with :)

She did get upset with me when I lost 4lbs last week, but nothing about when I *gained* 4lbs earlier in the pregnancy.

  • I'm at about 33 lbs right now. I wouldn't worry about it, everybody gaines differently and like you said, you and the baby are healthy so there is no reason for concern. I think it's silly to put a "rule" out there as it really isn't always possible to follow and it has nothing to do with what or how much you eat. It is how your body "responds' to the pregnancy.

  • I've gained 43 lbs which is more than I wanted to gain but no doctor has said anything to me about the weight. In fact, people tell me all the time it looks like I haven't gained much or that it doesn't look like I'm as far along as I actually am. I'm tall and was a little heavy (prob. 20 lbs overweight according to my supposed bmi targets) pre-pregnancy so I'm sure this all helps disguise the weight gain. I hope to gradually loose it (and maybe more) and get fitter after baby arrives.

I've made sure I've walked every day and did prenatal yoga or pilates for quite some time until it just got too uncomfortable. I hope to take that back up once baby arrives!

  • I was 5'7'' and 170# before I got pg.  That is a BMI of 26 which is the low range of overweight.  I wanted to gain around 15-25#, but as of last week I had gained 34#.  My legs feel so fat, and I'm looking forward to working out like I used to after this baby is born.  My OBGYN hasn't said a word about my weight gain, but I am disappointed.  I hope it comes off easily with the bfing.  I just wanted to commiserate.

  • My dr recommended I gain "about 35/40" because I started out small.  I've gained 31 lbs and still have two weeks to go, so I'm guessing I'll wind up within his target range for me.

I gained 38 lbs with my first and was only 6 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight by 11 weeks postpartum.  My only concern about losing it this time is that I'm nearly 7 yrs older and I'm guessing it will take longer to lose/more effort to lose this time...but it will happen...and hopefully by Memorial Day (I spent this entire summer dressed while our guests had a great time laying out and swimming in our pool - don't want to sit on the sidelines hiding a belly bulge again this year!).

  • I am just under 20 pounds of weight gain. I guess I am glad but I haven't really been "indulging" too much this pregnancy. Not that I am trying to diet at all, I just don't feel much like eating.

  • I'm at 19. I thought for sure I would be higher but I didn't gain for a month and then last appt I gained a pound and a half in a week so we'll see if that trend continues. Started out at a normal weight and I'm on track for what I wanted to gain (under 25lbs).

  • I am at 20 lbs. but didn't gain anything at all for 3 months in the middle.  Doctor seems ok with my weight.  I'm not so sure that 40 lbs would be enough to stress about if everyone is healthy.  More likely that doctor is concerned that 40 can quickly turn into 50, 60 etc. if you aren't careful.  As for post-partum, if you lost 70 lbs before getting pregnant, you are clearly capable of losing weight so I wouldn't stress about that either.  Good Luck!
