Twins and a blighted ovum?

I introduced myself last week, although I was very hesitant. We had a strong Baby A and Baby B had a weak heartbeat at the first u/s, but looked much, much better at my second ultrasound. Since the first ultrasound, there was a dark spot next to baby B that they were watching. At the second u/s, the tech thought it looked like part of baby b's sac.

So, today, I went in for my third ultrasound and both Baby A and Baby B look good again, which makes me feel so relieved. Now, there is a Baby C, though. It appears that Baby B split and that dark spot was actually an identical twin. Baby C is so far behind the other two babies, but does have a heartbeat. However, the heartbeat was too slow to measure. Both the tech and doctor have said that the baby is not viable.

Did anyone have a similar experience? What was the outcome? I am worried that Baby B could be harmed by the loss of Baby C somehow. I am also kinda nervous that Baby C will continue to grow. No offense to any triplet mommies, I think they are adorable and I would be thrilled to have three more babies. But, I am very worried about my ability to carry three babies. TIA!

  • I don't have any experience or advice, just wanted to say it sounds like you are going through a lot of emotions and stress- you will definitely be in my T&P!!

  • Oh my goodness, Big Hugs to you! I am so sorry you are going through this roller coaster. I read this post and was hesitant to respond but wanted to let you know my experience. After DS1 was born, and before I got pregnant with the twins I got pregnant with spontaneous ID triplets that we're mono/Tri (all 3 shared 1 placenta). At our 1st ultrasound baby C's heartbeat was only 90 bpm so the Dr was very worried about the viability but the heartbeat did pickup with subsequent ultrasounds however that baby was always smaller than the other 2. When we saw a MFM, he explained to us that it was going to be a "all or nothing pregnancy" meaning that if something did happen to that baby it would affect the other 2 because they all shared the same placenta. Unfortunately at 12 weeks we discovered that all 3 heartbeats had infact stopped and I had to have a D&C. We did not have any testing done to find out the cause of the miscarriage but my Dr suspected that the pregnancy was not going to have a good outcome but termination was not an option for us so we just had to let it play out. I hope someone else will have a more positive outcome than my situation and that you will have 2 or 3 very healthy take home babies.

  • First huge hugs! I am sure this is incredibly stressful. Your Baby C is not a blighted ovum, a blighted ovum is where there is an egg but no yolk sac or fetal pole. Your baby c has that and a heartbeat. I have heard so many times about people going in and having a low or bo hb and then the next week everything is fine. I pray for you this is the case or if not, it doesn't effect B. Best wishes and keep us posted!
