Hot stone massage?

So, I got a GC for a 60min. hot stone massage, I am assuming that I will have to wait until LO is born before I can use it. I will be asking my doctor this question but thought I would see what your thoughts are.

Re: Hot stone massage?

  • You do not have to wait! As long as you are not having any complications and the massage therapist is willing to perform massage on you, you should be a-oh-kay :)

Just be cautious of your lower back and ankles. (No deep massage in these areas) They also should not massage your tummy with the hot stones either. As long as you go to a certified/licensed professional, they should know this already.

I've been practicing for 3.5 years, certified for 3 years and have been state licensed for 1 year. (On hiatus currently due to economy and baby boy due in Feb!)

    Enjoy!!!

  • Absolutely not.... no hot stone while you are pregnant! I work for a corp that insures massage therapists and that's a huge no.

  • I would call the place the GC is to and ask as well as ask your OB.

I have a gift card for a full body message, but the place that I have the GC to, wont do it until after baby. They dont give messages to anyone in  2nd or 3rd tri, as acupuncture spots can induce labor (or so they say) and they dont want that liability.

That sounds sooo nice if you can do it!

  • I am not sure which insurance company you work for but my insurance covers it as long as the massage therapist is trained/certified/licensed. The massage therapist usually (a good one anyway) will request permission from the client's OB first though.

  • I say save the GC if you're interested in the hot stones experience- I'm an MT (6 years plus), and definitely do NOT use heat while working on my prenatals. I don't even turn on our heated tables (or, I turn them off when my CL gets on the table at the beginning of  the session.). the heat from the stones/table can raise your temp too high, best to just not mess with that. (plus aren't you hot right now anyway?)

save the experience for afterwards, it will feel delish to have the hot stones on your achey post baby body (and if you're afraid of leaking Bmilk, just bring your own towel or tell your therapist before you start... they can provide one for you.)

if you just want a massage, without the heat - go for it. they are divine for this stage of pregnancy. your MT will work with you to avoid the contraindicated points (no early labor, please!) and position you to be most comfortable. enjoy!
