Meaning For Shannon?

I know that I'm finding mostly: River in Ireland, is there a deeper meaning?

DH & I love the name but would like to be able to write out the meaning for baby's book. 

ETA: Noting if baby is a girl (though I know Shannon can be used either/or)

    I always associate it with the river, which I think is still a good meaning. :)

    This is one of those unisex names that I love for both.

    I was named for the River Shannon, and I always heard the "small and wise" meaning growing up. I've also heard "old and wise," but not as often as the other one.
