  • At about 20 weeks I had IU and was sent home with the same advice, just take it easy and stay hydrated.  I really from that point on just had some Braxton Hicks and just recently have started having cramping but I am getting close to time also.  I have heard that IU is just that, irritability, and it doesn't change the cervix if it is true IU

  • Good to hear, thank you!
  • I went to the hospital right at 24 weeks for contractions and cramping that didn't improve with rest and fluids at home. They had to give me two shots of terbutaline to calm things down and checked my cervix (totally fine). I got sent home with basically the same instructions: take it easy, hydrate, come back or call doc if the contrax picked back up.

Well, the next morning things were the exact same as before--I contracted constantly if I was standing or walking, and still having more than four an hour if I was laying down. Doctor then put me on Procardia XL daily. I was to stay home for a couple of days and rest to see how my body responded to the Procardia.

I got pulled from work Dec. 14 until January 2. I get to go back for a trial week next week. I will say my contractions have been improving on the Procardia. I do not have more than four an hour at rest, and they're not as frequent or intense when I move around.

We will just watch and see how things go when I return to work, and if I get pulled permanently. My doctor did say if I got pulled permanently I wouldn't be on bedrest, just reduced activity and "taking it easy" unless things got worse.

  • At 24 week I was in the hospital with contractions. No Dilation so after hydrating me I was sent one and was told to take the next couple days off and just rest. Things calmed down. At 28 weeks I was admitted with contractions every 3 min and nothing was helping. By the next day they slowed to two an hour and I was sent home on Full Bedrest for a week and then a check up to see if there was any change. I was Dilated to 1 cm 30%. A week later I was in there with more contractions but with Hydration they were able to get things settled again. No change from the last time I was in. Two weeks ago At a check up they noticed I was almost to 2 cm but still high and 30%. I had a few signs of Pre E so they did some blood tests that came back good. Then Monday I noticed contractions that actually hurt. They were only 15 min apart and would come and go not very consistant. I called my OB yesterday when I noticed they were about 7 min apart and taking my breath away. I was told to go straight to the hospital. i was there and the contractions were 5 min apart. They got me hydrated and the slowed for about half an hour then vamped back up and stronger. they decided to try Morphine which helped mee to sleep but only slowed them to about 2 an hour. They let me go home and I am out of work till at least tomorrow which i have a check up at 11. They have me doing a 24 hour urine collection which i am taking that back at 5 tonight. But my husand might ask them to admit me because I have been having contractions every 5 min since we got up at 8 it is now almost 3. They are pretty strong and my back is killing me. But that is my experiance with my Tempermental baby cage.

  • My IU didn't start acting up until 29/30 weeks last pregnancy. Since it was my first time, I spent a lot of time in the hospital trying to get the contractions stopped. This time, it started at 13 weeks. I have contractions all day, every day with an average of 10-20/hr. Some of them are mild, some are intense. Some hurt, some are just uncomfortable. But, ALL of them are annoying/scary.

I hate having an irritable uterus. I am constantly playing the game of "Should I Stay or Should I Go? (i.e. home or hospital). The labor standards of when to go to the hospital do not apply if you have IU. I've been on bed rest since 25 weeks, because the contractions started shortening my cervix. As of right now, whenever I start getting frequent, intense contractions I just turn off the TV, computer and lights. DH takes DD elsewhere, and I just lay in bed and relax or try to sleep. As long as the contractions ease up within 2 hours, I stay home. So far, this has worked. There have been several times when I have wanted to go to the hospital, but did this instead. Anyway, that's just me.

  • I've been in and out if the hospital beginning 24 weeks with contractions and a shortened cervix. I was in the hopital over the weekend and since then my IU has definitely "calmed down" with the help of a stricker bedrest schedule.

  • I was admitted two wks ago due to 15 contractions per hr, loss of plug, and my cervix shortened. Even on the mag they never stopped my contractions but calmed them to under 10 hr. I'm home now on meds and dr said if I get mote than 10 hr for two hrs or they change to come in. It is scary, how do we know when we are dialating or our cervix is changing more! Some contractions I don't feel!!! Kelly-I would NOT go to work under your condition!

  • I have had some irritability since we were almost in a car accident at 30 weeks.  They just told me to take it easy at that point.  A couple of weeks later, I was having regular contractions as opposed to irritability and was put on bed rest.

    Best of luck to you!!

Same thing happened to me today. I was at the hospital with frequent BH last wednesday. Then when I went in for my follow up with my OB today and he put me on the monitor again to see how I was doing now. In the end he told me I had IU and told me the same thing. Take it easy, keep an eye on it, no restrictions.

  • I have had it with both pregnancies.   I've read that each pregnancy it gets earlier and stronger, and that's partially been true for me.   This pregnancy it wasn't bad as early as last time, but they have been much stronger.   I agree with pp's - hydration makes a HUGE difference.    If I'm really good about drinking water CONSTANTLY, it really helps.   Also, warm baths tend to relax your muscles.   BH contractions can change your cervix, so just keep in touch with your OB about when you need to be seen if you're having a lot.   I can thankfully say that my IU hasn't caused PTL with either baby (my first daughter was born 3 days after my EDD, and I'm full term as of tomorrow with this one), but my goodness it's annoying, distracting and worrisome!   Hang in there, and good luck!
