I have no experience with IKEA, but I am super, super pumped that we finally live within an hour of one. How well does their furniture hold up? We're thinking of getting the Hemnes dresser and nightstand for Baby2. Also, does IKEA furniture have the roller tracks for the drawers or are they on a wood track in the middle?
Re: IKEA Hemnes furniture
Hmm, thank you, I will have to look at them. It's nice to know that they are solid.
I love the Ikea Hemnes. I think the look is very nice and does not appear cheap. I have the brown in my room and the white in my DD's room. The brown does dent easily but the white has a shiny finish on it so it does not do that. Not sure what color you were looking at.
As far as durability goes - Ikea furniture is ok as long as you leave it in one spot. The dresser in my DD's room (which we have to replace now that she is mobile) has moved 4 times with me over the course of the past 7 years!. The lower drawers are starting to come apart and come off the tracks and I'm afraid they will break if my LO tries to pull on them. So we are getting a new Hemnes. I have to look but I think there are two tracks on either side of the drawer. HTH!
Bahh, that is exactly what I was wondering about. H is military so it will see many moves. We will probably get the lighter brown if it's a boy and the white if it's a girl.
Ikea is a case of you get what you pay for. It does the job to fill space, but it is definitely not made to stand time. I find that you do best there with anything that has no moving parts like frames or shelves. I think dressers are tricky as you hear about inconsistency. Some people can have ones that have no problems. Others will get the same one and it is a disaster.
We have the white dresser for DD and though she's only 14 months old, it's held up well so far!
It's on roller tracks, and the only thing I don't love about it (which is a feature that they promote) is that it "slides" closed without pushing it closed, which means that fingers (mine and my DD) get stuck easily if you're not paying attention. I've considered installing drawer locks (like in the kitchen) but am debating.
THIS! We have the brown in our room and white in the nursery. We have the nightstand and the long dresser in white in the nursery and the wood isn't nearly as soft as the brown in our room. We've moved the dresser in our room about 6 times (from state to state) and although the bottom drawer started to come apart, a little wood glue fixed it right up.
The nursery furniture we have is all ikea with the exception of the crib and recliner. In our bedroom our bed, dresser, and nightstands are also IKEA. Here are some pictures:
