I'm about 31 weeks now and don't have much room for food. I also don't have insane cravings like I did the first trimester (um, Chef Boyardee and Capt'n Crunch...not proud of it!) But I am craving ice on a constant basis. To chew and drink. I've seen my dentist and my teeth are fine, no new cavities and no problems so far. I'm eating one 10 pound bag of ice every two days!! (Sonic ice, to be exact, I'm an ice connaseur now!)
My doc says it's called Pica, and she's fine with it because other women have much worse Pica situations: like cornstarch, dirt and toliet paper, no joke! I've started taking an iron supplement, but to no avail with the cravings.
I also got a call this am from the doc saying my glucose levels are off, maybe gestational diabetes. I go in tomorrow for a 3 hour test with fasting from midnight on the night before. Not sure what Gestational Diabetes is except it can make your babies bigger than they should be. The doc said I may have to take insulin depending on what the test tomorrow shows. Anyone else dealing with this, too? I'm 37 and this is my first preganancy, expecting boy girl twins.
Thanks!!
Re: Anyone Craving ICE?! Iron and a Gestational Diabetes Question...
I was the same way wiht ICE my first two pregnancies. I've noticed an increase in the craving over the last few weeks too. Thank GOD it's only ice. My doctor told me the same thing. I also crave hamburgers and steaks CONSTANTLY. Found out I'm anemic so I'm on iron as well. Unfortunately it hasn't gone away.
Good luck.
When I was pregnant I could not get enough ice! I normally hate ice or even cold drinks ( i like hot drinks or room temp) but it was non-stop ice chewing while pg, and I had major iron deficiancy and was on iron pill ( make sure you do not take it within 3 hours of any dairy or it decreases effects) I also had to eat A LOT of protein and spec. red meat, along with all of Dr. Lukes other supplements from 20+ weeks per my MFM. I also was dizzy, light headed and had racing heart almost the whole pg which was from low iron and increased blood volume. Didn't have GD though.
I just recently read the ice-chewing/low iron correlation and couldn't believe it!
It went away pretty much as soon as I delivered, and i can't stand ice as before!
( PS, delivered at 35w b/g) Good luck you are almost at the finish line!
My Mum was the same when she was pregnant with me - she would sit there crunching through trays and trays of ice while my cousin st there eating nachoes! Now whenever I have ice in my drink I won't let anyone take the glass away until I've finished with the ice (:
