Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Moms of older babies: Quick, easy food ideas?

Jack is on 100% table food and I am struggling with finding things he can eat. A lot of nights we eat dinner after him and our leftovers are usually not suitable for him (last night was lamb chops and asparagus) so I usually make him something seperate. I need ideas for healthy, kid friendly ideas that are easy!

So far I rotate between a kind of pasta, hummus, eggs, fruit, veggies. I need more main meal ideas that are not so carb based. TIA!

  • I'm sure I'll get flamed, but on nights I don't want to feed her what we eat, I make her some leftovers or I keep some Gerber graduate meals on hand ::gasp::.

  • lol katy- Last night Jack ate cheese and ritz crackers. So I am not much better!
  • at least they are eating!
  • grilled cheese sandwich, chicken nuggets, french fries, lunchable jr., bread product (roll, croissant, toast, etc)

Have you tried giving him small bites of whatever you are eating?  You will be surprised at how they will really eat anything.  DS loves broccoli.

  • Here are some of the things Katen eats:

    Grilled cheese sammys

    quesadillas

chicken tenders  - just chicken, not breaded

asparagus, carrots, peas, beans, potatoes in small chunks

chicken noodle soup that's thickened - messy but healthy

cheese sticks (I like sargento's or Kraft Cheese crumbles)

    cottage cheese

    applesauce

Freezer waffles (target makes organic whole wheat tiny waffles)

breakfast bars - earth's best makes organic

    toast

pumpkin and squash cubes - make ahead and freeze

I get the bags of organic frozen peas and carrots - they seem to be a nice size for little fingers

Stir fry veggies that are frozen seem to work well too

I make star pasta and put a mixture of melted shredded cheese and sour cream or cream cheese on it. Sometimes I add broccoli also

Black beans - rinsed really really well and put with rice

Minute rice makes whole grain rice in a microwavable bowl. Just pop in microwave for 30secs. Add some beans or veggies and you have baby stirfry - add some egg and you have baby fried rice :)

  • We had lamb chops the other night and DS loved them! ?You could probably give him asparagus too. ?We just give him what we eat - so a meat, veggie, and starch - either sweet potato or brown rice. ?We also do black beans for him. ?Whole wheat pasta is good too. ?

  • I have a pretty big list at this point, it is difficult to keep their little tummies fed!  Here's what I keep around...

Frozen peas, crinkle cut carrots, and green beans - these are really easy to nuke, also frozen cherries are delicious for "dessert"

Frozen slices of turkey meatloaf I made a few weeks ago

Frozen whole wheat pancakes, frozen waffles - I spread pureed pumpkin (which I freeze in cubes) on the pancakes, and you would think I was feeding him chocolate cake!

Cooked pasta in the fridge, I make a big batch at the beginning of the week and just use a little at a time, ditto for a cooked sweet potato

American cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, shredded mozzerella/cheddar

Tofu, I just serve this straight from the package, I once made "tofu nuggets" but my DS likes it better raw!

Little jars of canned peaches/mixed fruit, like you get for kids' lunches

Eggs, but only if we're having eggs for dinner, too

I just made a spinach lasagna, I will freeze that in pieces

    Meatballs/meat sauce, very messy!

Sometimes I cook use avocado when cooking, so I cut an extra one up for DS

I got a can of Amy's organic mixed chili beans - no spices, just the beans - and that was a big hit!!

Hmm, that's all I can think of right now.  I read a good rule of thumb somewhere, to serve at least 3 different categories of food per meal - so a veggie/fruit, a grain, and a protein/fat.  So it's good to find foods that combine these, like the spinach lasagna or meatloaf (make it with veggie purees).  Sometimes I literally just melt a piece of American cheese over pasta and serve it with peas, seems lame to me but DS loves it.
