Babies: 3 - 6 Months

5 Month Old Throwing himself backward when upset?

Is this normal at this age?  He does it when he's fighting sleep, or frustrated.  Of course I googled it before I posted here so I wasn't wasting anyone's time and I found "you should let LO CIO on a number of boards" and "he needs to learn you mean business when it's bedtime". This doesn't work for me lol, and I read on a pediatric website that it's a developmental milestone (going towards tantrums) that happens at 9+ months.

 Anyone else have a 5 month old doing this?

Re: 5 Month Old Throwing himself backward when upset?

  • hi!! I actually  noticed this for the first time when my MIL was holding DD a few weeks ago. I think it was a way for her to communicate that she was not happy & wanted my attention. My MIL then said that she was going to be the kind of child that threw herself in the store when she didn't get what she wanted. Needless to say that really bugged me, my sisters & I were not/are those kind of temper tantrum kids, in my opinion children that are spoiled rotten are usually the kind to act like that.

    It's interesting to know though, that it's a milestone =} and actually as I type this LO is in her travel bed, grunting & getting stiff because she doesn't want to sleep.

    I think as long as it is a temporary (while they can't verbally speak) way of communicating I'm okay with it lol.

    Glad to know we're in the same boat (misery loves company right??) LOL -- yah the website I read said it's their early way of communicating, just didn't seem to normally come this early.

    And FWIW -- I definitely don't think it's a sign that we'll have bratty kids -- if anything, I think they'll be good communicators :c)

  • Do you mean arching the back and throwing the head back? If so, my DD has been doing that for a while. It happens when she is overtired. I try to offer food and she throws her head back and arches her back. It's frustrating, but I change her position (usually on my shoulder) and she calms down eventually. Good luck!

    Yah, that's pretty much what he's doing -- he does it anytime he's frustrated, it's hard to hold onto him.  Especially when I know he's pooped and he can't seem to calm down.  I know this weekend was super overstimulating for him -- so hopefully it'll settle down.

    It's always so interesting how babies are so similar, but yet so different. It is very comforting though, that most milestones are met at about the same age and therefore able to get advice or share experiences with other moms.

    I don't always appreciate (actually never.. is that too mean -lol) what my MIL has to say in regards to DD. My DH parents seem to always have to put their two cents & be nosy and her "thoughts & comments" on what my child will be like are not welcomed. I just kind of smile/laugh it off in front of her. It's very true though, that as moms we ALWAYS know our child/ren best =}

    hey he's just telling you he doesn't like that poopy diaper!! lol

    At only a few months old LO started babbling a lot when she had a poopy diaper. I thought it was the cutest thing!! I would just talk back and smile & play. It wasn't until I would move the blankie that I would get the very potent poop smell!! My poor child just wanted out of the diaper and I would keep playing!! lol I know better now though! lol =}

  • Yes! My LO does this and has been for a while. He will arch his back and whine. Sometimes, if DH or I are holding him when he does this, and one of us walks by, he will sit back up and reach for whoever walked by, like we're going to save him from the mean parent. ;-)

    Ditto both of you. She just turned four months and she is a preemie. :) I think the little hair I have left will all turn grey if her tantrums keep up.

  • DD2 did that too mostly if she was extra tired. She never threw a tantrumin a public place.

  • DD is 5 months old and has been doing this for a while. We refer to it as straight baby because she gets really stiff. I really don't know how shes ever going to learn to sit up on her own because whenever she gets mad she throws herself backward!

  • Yes!  Thanks for making us feel normal.  Our 5mth old girl has been doing it for a little while but a lot more lately.  I just rub her chest to stomach and she calms down.  Not sure if it's when she's sleepy or not but we'll just have to pay more attention.
