PPD/PPA ?

So Hepcats post got me thinking that I should really address my PPA. I thought my anxiety would go away after the scary newborn phase, and it has a little, but I still struggle with it more than I think I should.

So here's my question and it may be a stupid one. Should I schedule an appointment with my OBGYN? I don't have a family doctor or anything...as my doctor visits are usually limited to my yearly gyno appointment and if I get sick I just run to the urgent care clinic...

I've never dealt with anxiety or any other mental health issues before this, so I'm kind of clueless.

Re: PPD/PPA ?

  • I went to my OBGYN, but I caught my by my 6 week appt. I've heard some OBGYN's make you go to your family dr after that point, but it doesn't hurt as a starting point. I would call them and tell them your reasoning for wanting to go to them. I'm sure they would understand.

    Good luck!

  • Well you know what I'll say - yes. The only reason I didn't go sooner was because work was crazy busy and I wasn't sure if it was related to that. What's the worst that can happen by going in?

ETA: I also saw my OB.

Thanks! I think I'm going to call next week some time!

  • Yes see your OB. Then he/she can refer you to a Psychiatrist/therapist. It is no fun living with anxious thoughts. GL!

  • I called my OB's office and told them that I suspected that I had PPA.  They set up an appointment for me with one of their in house therapists.  I've never had mental issues before this either so it was scary to make the call.  You're making a courageous step by calling your doctor.

  • Thanks for the support and advice, ladies! :)
  • I went to my MW at 4 weeks and she was horrible to me so please don't be discouraged if they aren't nice. I feel much better since getting on Zoloft.

Thanks for the warning. I'm going to call my OBGYN's office to see who I need to schedule an appointment with. I'm hoping they are nice to me hahaha!

  • I know it varies by doc by I had my primary, my OB, AND my pedi asking me constantly how I was doing so when I finally called in and saw my OB, he was awesome about it. I had even called in with questions about the IUD and how I thought it might be making me crazy the way the pill had and my OB's nurse, while shooting down that theory because of how the IUD works, repeatedly said how PPD can hit up to one year and not to be afraid to come in if I didn't feel better.
