Is my baby large or is my EDD off?

I have been having an ultrasound done every month to follow the progression of my placenta b/c its is marginal previa. The tech said my Baby's estimated weight is 6 lbs 6 oz @ 34 wks and 4 days, she is in the 88th percentile. Placenta is posterior and is 2.9 cm from the OS of the cervix.

I hope I can deliver vaginally, will find out on the 27 after talking with my OBGYN.

  • From everything I've read and been told, these measurements can be off by as much as 2 lbs, depending on the position of the baby and the skill/technique of the tech doing the measurements.  Also from what I've read, generally your body does not make a baby that your body cannot deliver- plenty of tiny women deliver big babies!  I would do some research on this before you talk to your doctor, especially if you are hoping to avoid a c-section.

  • My mother is a tiny lady and delivered 9+ lb babies.  Just because the baby could possibly be big doesn't mean you won't be able to deliver vaginally.  In fact, I've heard of some women having more problems with a normal baby vs. a big baby.  It's all about head size.

  • I wouldn't worry!  Unfortunately the measurements can be so radically off that I wouldn't even trust them.

  • My baby has been measuring big, including a large head.  My daughter was big (9 lbs 7 oz) and her head was in the 99th percentile. I did it vaginally. My sister, who is smaller than me, delivered a nearly 10 pound baby vaginally.

My point is, your might surprise you with what it can do and honestly, weight estimates are notoriously off. I would try not to focus on the number.
