switching formulas ?

Did you call the pediatrician before switching and/or let the doctor know you switched?  I made an executive decision and switched from similac advance to sensitive but I didn't call the doctor.  DH seems to think we should have consulted and now thinks we need to call and let them know we changed.  Did you call and ask?  Do I need to call and let doctor know?  I didn't think they kept formula in a medical file....

Re: switching formulas ?

  • We made the mistake of switching DS formula and didnt notify the Pedi.

I dont think it would have been that bad if DS would have been ok.

The switch mad him have terrible poops, stomach problems, etc.

We found out later that he cant have milk based products and is now soy/ reflux meds.

I know our Pedi keeps his formula in his medical file.

I would call just to let them know, that way if he goes through multiple formulas you can look back and see what you have tried if you cant remember

  • We called and discussed with our pedi before changing formulas, but DS was also on the neosure for preemies and it was making him very gassy.

  • Why are you switching?  If you are switching to a sensitie formula I would assume that the doctor would want to know about excessive gas, spitting up etc...We took our LO in and discussed formula issues with the pedi (excessive gas, fussiness, etc...) and our pedi advised us not to switch formulas "willy-nilly" (seriously, his words) but to call him if we felt like the one we are on isn't working for us....there could be issues that you doctor would want to know about...

Just a thought.  However, I am a huge beilever in instinct so if you think a simple formula change is all thats needed than go with your gut.

    Good luck!

  • we switched from Similac advance to targets brand of up &up. I never asked my pedi but it was just a simple swap and was not because of any issues. I  did tell my pedi went i saw him a few weeks later though, he did seem to care as long as i didnt change him to a different type ie....(soy)

  • We switched (we supplement, she gets mostly BM) from Similac Advance to sensitive and then back to advance, mentioned it at the pediatrician yesterday and they didnt seem concerned at all. DH opened the wrong sample can (sensitive) which is why we switched back and forth. Didnt seem to bother her though
  • FYI: We switched b/c of gas and reflux.  It has helped tremendously.
  • We switched from Advanced to Sensitive at the request of our pediatrician bc DS was colicy. She said that whenever we wanted to try to switch back to Advanced we could and that we didnt need to ask her about formula changes as long as we stayed within the same brand.  She said that if we wanted to cross over brands she would need to consult with us first.

I am glad that she suggested the swap bc it has helped DS a lot! She also gave us about a months worth of samples.

  • I would say that as long as you aren't switching to like soy or a different type of formula you wouldn't need to consult the pedi.  If you are just switching to a different brand because you want to save money and get the store brand or something like that, I don't think they care.  But if you feel your baby has an intolerance to milk they would want to know and check it out.
