Cleaning Used Toys

I just received a lot of toys from our best friend, including several of the car seat buddies.  What is the best way to clean these?  I'm assuming I just surface clean them.  TIA!

Re: Cleaning Used Toys

  • The family I nanny for has me clean the kid's toys once every couple of weeks. They have me fill the sink with hot water & dish soap, then put the non-porous toys in there to soak for about half an hour. For the large toys they have me use paper towels and cleaning products and basically just wipe them down, and for stuffed animals and stuff we put them in the washer.

I'm sure all this isn't necessary, but I think just surface cleaning them would be fine.

  • Plastics and things can be wiped down with disinfecting wipes. The botanical ones are probably your best bet here since they don't require rinsing of surfaces that might come into contact with baby's mouth.

As for anything stuffed, I would recommend just putting the things in a pillowcase and tossing it into the washer. Or if they're clean, but just not "fresh, sprinkle some baking soda over them and shake it out. The washing machine route is pretty simple, though. GL

  • When I worked in a daycare, they had me use lysol spray and wipes multiple times a day, but we were a daycare in a gym that saw a bunch of kids every day.  Personally, anything I get used I'm either washing in the washer or letting soak in soapy water in the sink.  To keep clean, unless other kids come over and play with them or they leave the house, toys will probably just get lysol'd every week.  Anything that leaves the house or otherwise gets gross will probably get stuck in the washer/sink once a week.  I figure I'll disinfect everything more thoroughly once every month or two.

  • For plastic toys I use hot bleach water mixed with about 3 tablespoons bleach in a large kitchen sink full of water. I wash the toys first in dishwater then let them sit in the bleach for about a minute then let them air dry. For soft toys I just throw them in the washer.
