Parenting after a Loss

I'm such a mess

Yesterday I took Mason in for his 18 mo check up.  I brought up my concerns about him not talking (as I did at his 15 mo check up).

His pedi is also concerned and wants him screend for Autism (he also had some red flags when she asked some Autism screening questions that they do at 18 mo.).  I have been crying on and off ever since I heard this.  I'm making the mistake of reading about Autism online.  Oh and I called the phone number that she referred me to and it's disconnected.         *sigh*

I'm scared, I'm sad.  I feel like a terrible mother.  I'm at work and I can't even concentrate.  I'm just a complete mess.

Re: I'm such a mess

  • Huge hugs.  Get away from Google.  Call your pedi and get a new referral-doing something will hopefully make you feel a little better.

Getting him screened doesn't mean a positive test!  I know you're scared, but you're a wonderful mama.  Take this one step at a time.

    Lilypie Third Birthday tickers

  • First Hugs, second as someone in the field IF he is dignosed there is a very wide spectrum as to where he may fall. Third with a diagnosis at 18 months and intense therapies the onset can be slowed and change dramatically. Early intervention is amazing and with intense treatment these children are making amazing strides. You have to be your childs advocate, stay away from google, you will only make yourself crazy. Call the pedi and ask for another referal. Also  autismspeaks, org is a great resource. PM if I can be of any help.

  • First of all, hugs to you.

    Second, step away from google.

Third, you are a great mom.  You are being proactive and getting him screened.  Hopefully, it's nothing.....but if he is on the spectrum, you are going to be in a great position to get him any help he needs nice and early.

    Good luck to you!

It is great that you are educating yourself right now, but google is not your friend. Wait for the screening and get a second or third opinion.

I hope all the tests come back negative.

I hope that he will just qualify for EI and that he just needs some assistance in that area and it's not autism.

Can it even be diagnosed this young?

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this right now.

  • ((hugs)) Sorry you are going through this.  I don't have any experience in the area really.  But what I understand from my aunt whose son has Aspberger's, early intervention is critical.  You are being thorough and getting everything checked out.  Good for you.  You are on top of things, mama!

FWIW, my mom said I didn't talk to almost 2. Pedis were concerned about hearing loss, etc. Then she said one day I started talking and never stopped. And..I still talk alot :)
