Nonstress test question

Is this a standard test? I am a low risk pregnancy so is this something that I will have to do? I start my weekly doctor visits this week, just not sure what these tests are. I will talk to my Dr. but wanted to know some personal experiences.

Re: Nonstress test question

  • It often becomes standard in the last few weeks if you are over 35 (depends on dr). Other than that they may be ordered for BP, GD or other risk factors, but would not  be standard.

  • I'm not sure if it is standard for low risk pregnancies, but I have GD so I've had to have one every week since my 32nd week.  There no big deal.  You basically sit in the office with two monitors on your belly and a machine records the babies heartbeat.  I've had funny experiences during these tests because my baby doesnt like the bands the monitors are attached to so he kicks at them.  Good luck!
  • They're not standard at my OB's office.  We've been doing them since 32w due to BP and now twice a week due to IUGR.  Just ask your OB if they consider it standard and if not why they want you to do it.

  • I have been having twice weekly NSTs for over two months due to some medication I am on.  They might be doing it just to check the baby without any cause.  They are really nothing other than monitoring the baby.  I am hooked up to a monitor for the baby's heartbeat and another monitor for contractions.  I am also given a counter to click every time the baby kicks.  Pretty simple and it is nice to know that the baby is not under any stress.

  • Not standard. Typically only done when there are risk factors or a concern.

  • My dr does at least one standard. I got one this week and there are absolutely no concerns and I have no medical conditions so it all depends on the dr.

  • My old practice I went to did one standard after 40 weeks just to make sure baby was still comfy.  That was the only one I had.
