My Poor H (NBR)

 *Warning - If you're squeamish, don't read!*

So this morning H & I had to have semi-physicals (blood sample, urine sample, blood pressure, height & weight) for our life insurance and I went first. My blood pressure was excellent 122/81 and the lady said that we should be about 120/80 and she was very happy. She took my blood no problem and I didn't feel the needle at all.

Then it was poor H's turn. She took his blood pressure and it was sooo high that she thought something was wrong and she took it again. Nope, still really high. So then she says "Okay well lets take your blood, then we'll try again" So she sticks his right arm and nothing, no blood came out. She proceeded to move the needle all around and make my poor husband who is 250 lbs and a big tough guy go sheet paper white. I swore he was going to pass out. I kept asking if he was okay and he'd just nod yes. Finally he couldn't stand it anymore and told her she better try the other arm before he passes out. So she does, NOTHING, no blood would come out. So she says "Oh, maybe it's my needle. Hang on I'll try a new one" so she had to poke him a THIRD time. FINALLY it worked and poor H seriously looked like he was going to pass out by the time she was done.

So THEN the nurse says "Okay let's take your blood pressure again". SKY HIGH. Worse then before, obviously, because he was just poked a bunch of times. So, H's blood pressure was 150/110. Needless to say the nurse told us to get him into our family doctor asap as medically, she has to warn him that that's way too high. Ugh. She left and my poor H looked like he was going to cry. He just kept saying "I'm not even 30, I can't have high blood pressure!!". He looked so beat up and upset and I had to leave him to go to work. I felt terrible.

Poor guy Sad I called him at lunch and he seemed okay but I could tell he's still stressed but I told him he needs to try to relax because the Dr is going to take his blood pressure and if he's stressing, it's going to be even higher. So now we wait... ugh!

EDIT: Does anyone know what kind of testing they do if they suspect you have High Blood Pressure? I imagine they wouldn't base it off one test and put him on medication so I'm just curious if any of you know what they do.

Re: My Poor H (NBR)

  • What a terrible experience!

About 2 weeks ago, DH stabbed himself just above the knee with a utility knife. He needed 17 stitches, 10 inside, 7 outside. When they took his blood pressure it was high. He told the nurse that it was normally the low end of average. And she said it was okay for now, considering the circumstance (he had just dropped his pants to show her the t-shirt he tied around his stab wound, then had to remove it to see blood pour down his leg). But that was just the beginning. We waited for a couple hours, and when we finally got into the room for his stitches, the doctor started to clean it out and the alcohol in the cleanser was hurting him so much he was shaking!!!! He started yelling at the doctor, "What are you doing? Is there alcohol in that? Why does it hurt so much? When are you going to freeze it?" So she said there was some alcohol, she'd freeze it in a minute. Well she leaves gauze with the cleanser on it on top of the wound and LEAVES for at LEAST 5 minutes. He was getting so anxious!!! The freezing was a whole other story. He was yelling at the doctor again and all she says is, "Just don't think about it... I'm not!" With a smirk on her face. His normal dry sense of humour that normally would find that hilarious, was not kicking in.

The worst part is that I couldn't stop laughing at how out of control he was!! He's always saying that if I'm yelling, crying, and swearing during birth he'll be embarrassed. I was laughing out of control. So much so, that I had to ask the doctor to sit on a stool because I was getting light headed! I really felt bad about the whole thing but I just couldn't stop the laughter from coming out! I'm laughing now just thinking about it! The poor guy! It was probably the worst injury he's had since he's been in construction and all I could do was laugh!!!

  • My H has had high blood pressure where it has made him uncomforable and caused headaches. For him, they tried two different medications. He hardly took them every day like he was supposed to, and then he stopped taking them at all because he says it doesn't bother him anymore. My H had a lot of stress during that time, and he thinks he just needed the meds during that time, and says that now he doesn't have the high blood pressure. Maybe your H is stressed?

  • I sometimes test to have very high blood pressure, and it's always turned out to be due to nerves.  Something about white coat syndrome.  They recommend that you get your blood pressure taken at different times over several days (preferably when you are relaxed, like at the grocery store). It's very important that you are feeling relaxed and are not anxious about the test results.

The first time they had me run through this, I went to the school health clinic, and had the nurses take it.  It was high every single day.  Then one bright nurse said I should take a 10min nap.  My blood pressure went down and they decided it was high because I was nervous that it would be high.

  • My dad is in incredibly good health (at 54). A few years ago they wanted to put him on meds for high blood pressure. He really didn't want to, so they sent him with a home reading device, and told him to take his blood pressure every so many hours for two days. ALL of his in-home readings were just fine...the second he stepped back into the doctor's office, it sky rocketed. They have basically told him that he doesn't need to be on meds as of right now, because it is the anxiety he gets over doctors that causes it.

Maybe your husband is in a similar situation? Like other ladies said, stress is a huge cause, and for some people the mere fact of knowing you are going to see a doctor or knowing you are going to have to have your blood drawn, stresses them to the point of high blood pressure. If you can, you might talk to the doctor about having them give him an at-home device to see if it is something along those lines???
