would you leave a note

In trying to avoid the insanely huge truck parked crooked next to me I swiped the rear of another truck (thanks Texas).  I sat there 20 minutes and the owner never came out.  There was not major damage, I did leave a swipe of my paint between his bumper and tire and there is a small (1 inch) dent.  My 9 year old said he was scared and let's just leave.  I told him we are going to do the right thing....I left a note.

If you have ever swiped someone in a parking lot (would you) or have you ever left a note?  or would you just leave?

Trust me...I did think about just leaving but I have been swiped in a walmart lot and it sucked coming out, seeing the swipe and nobody owned up.  I would of said no big deal and thanked the person for being honest.

Re: would you leave a note

  • You definitely did the right thing!   I would have left a note as well :)

  • Yes, it's the right thing to do. And if my child was with me too I would find it even harder to just leave w/o leaving info, since we want to teach our children to be good people.

  • Yep - I left a note - but I left a bit more damage than you did. The person was so cool about it and was really so happy I left the note. It was dark and I know she wouldn't have seen it until the morning - but I didn't need that hanging over my head. You did the right thing. Karma comes around in mysterious ways. ;)
  • I probably wouldn't if there was honestly no damage, but if there was, I would have.  Good for you for not being "that" person!

  • I have left a note before and the person called to say not to worry about the damage. Its really all you could have done at the time so I wouldn't worry. You were honest and gave a good faith effort towards resolving it, you are in the clear!
  • I got someone's rear bumper backing out of a parking lot in the pouring rain outside of the library in college.  I stuck a note inside a bag and stuck it under the windshield wiper.  I was glad recently that a person witnessed someone else hit my parked car.  Although the person who hit me didn't leave a note, the witness left a note with his contact info and the license # of the car that hit me.  Honestly, I think you're a jerk if you know you hit someone and don't at least leave a note.

  • With the way people ding up and swipe my car (seems like a daily friggin thing), the biitch side of me would love to say eff it, but I would most likely do the right thing and either stay there or leave a note with my info.

  • I've never hit someone in a parking lot but I remember being really young and my mom barely tapped someone's back bumper with hers. She left a note and the person called to thank her for the note and not to worry, they just appreciated the thought. I was maybe 6 or 7 when it happened but I still remember it to this day and if I ever hit someone in a parking lot, I will leave a note. So I would've done the same thing for sure!

  • I was backing out of my driveway once and gently tapped a car parked on the street (street was very narrow).  I left a note and the guy called me and said not to worry about it and that he was very impressed I had the decency to leave a note.  So yes, I definitely think you did the right thing!

  • The person called and she was very nice and said she was honestly shocked someone left a note and she appreciated my honesty.  She said no worries...I am glad I left the note.
  • I live on a narrow street off of a main road in Des Moines. Lots of cars will pull onto our street if they have car problems, resulting in cars sitting in the street for days. There was one right at the end of our drive way, a brown old P.O.S. that I'm pretty sure had reached it's 30th life. I was backing out of the drive way, didnt see it and forgot it was there. I left a HUGE dent in the driver's door and in return, got paint on my bumper. I felt bad, but I didn't leave a note. In fact, when we got home, DH took a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser to my bumper, and removed the paint. We also called the cops to have the car towed. Embarrassed

Typically, I would leave a note though..
