Midwives or OB's?

Just wondering if most of you ladies are going with OB's or midwives? I've contacted both midwifery practices in my area and are waiting to hear back.... I won't know until the new year if they'll accept me. FX they do!! My sister used them and lots of my friends have and they are amazing!

  • I am going with my OB, he has been my doctor for several years and I am very comfortable with him.  Unlike many OB's today he doesn't believe in inducing early or planned c-sections (unless there are medical reasons to do so).  Also my insurance is iffy on covering midwives.

  • My practice has both, but I've seen mostly the midwives for my appointments. I am trying to have an unmedicated birth and they seem more supportive of that. I do see someone from the MFM practice for my ultrasounds which makes me more comfortable with seeing a midwife for my checkups, since we've been having some (not major) issues with blood pressure and baby's growth.

  • I love my OB!  I am definitely sticking with her.  Besides, with my problems, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't qualify (and probably wouldn't feel comfortable with) a midwife.  My OB's practice has several OBs in it.  I love my OB, but I also really really like one of the other OBs I've seen.

I've have to see an MFM.

  • I'm going with an OB because the only midwives that deliver at my hospital of choice are my coworkers.  I would rather not work with people who have seen my crotch up close and personal.  I also do like my doc and his partners.

  • I don't have the option of a midwife, since I'm high risk. My OB will be delivering me with the help of the MFM.

  • My practice only has OBs. I am not against MW though. I'd like to go to a birthing center with my next pregnancy. I'd like to try something that offers a little more variety than what I've gotten with my OB. So a MW may be what I choose next time.

  • I guess I'm lucky in Canada, midwives are covered by our provincial health coverage.

I just know that the OB's in my area are crap, and the only good OB's are like a 40 min drive away (totally worth it if I can't get in with midwives)

  • I'm still deciding.

But this is a topic of much debate with me and my DH.  I've always wanted a completly drug free natural birth with a MW.  But DH disagrees.  When DH was born he was almost 12 lbs, and got stuck in him mom's birth cannal.  It was very tramatic for both mom and baby.  She actaully flat lined and was in a coma for a few days.  He spent days in the NICU.  Granted this was 38 years ago.  But DH is just terrified that something similar will happen to me.  He doesn't want to take any risks.  A home birth is out of the question.

I'm thinking we'll compromise with an OB and a doula.

I go to an OB for my annual exams, and they don't have any MW there.  I actually have my first appt with my OB tomorrow.  The hospital that they are associated with has a separate birthing center building.  I plan to ask my OB a bunch of questions about thier thoughts on natural drug free births.  How they feel about MV and doulas.  etc.

I might be able to convince DH to interview with a MW.  But we'll see about that.

PS - What's "MFM" mean?  Just when I thought I was comfortable with all the IF acronyms, I move to the PAIF board and have to learn new ones!!!

  • I love my OB, and love that in her practice she only works with only 1 other OB.  She told me that she delivers 95% of her patients, the other 5% is the partner.  My SIL used her for the delivery of my nephew and it went great.

She answers all of my questions, no matter how small, and never makes me feel like I'm wasting her time. I've been with her for 3 years and she did the original tests when we were having trouble TTC and recommended us the the RE.  I like that she calls me with test results, etc, and not some office staff member.
