High-Risk Pregnancy

34 weeks - 1/2 cm dilated, 2.4cm cervix - questions...

So, at 26 weeks I had PTL contractions for three days straight (didn't know that's what they were at first), they only calmed down with magnesium in the hospital. No dilation, though. Cervix was 2.4 cm at this time. Then they put me on bed rest. Cervix went back up to 3.1 range. A few weeks ago, it went back to 2.4 range and it's been like that for 2 weeks straight (at least it's stable). In my last appointment, (Friday), they told me I'm dilated 1/2 cm. They've taken me off bed rest, though - they say light activity shouldn't affect anything, and a 1/2 cm could be a sign, or it could mean nothing. No contractions, fortunately.

Some questions...

  1. Once you're dilated, you're dilated. So shouldn't I be on bed rest at 34 weeks, haha? (Doc says they wouldn't stop labor if it started at this point)
  2. If I deliver a premie (let's say, this week, at 34 weeks), what's average length of time in hopsital I should expect?
  3. If baby is in hospital for a while, does that go on MY insurance or his?
  4. Is the doc underestimating the risks of delivering a premie to me? Shes says little risk of long term complications at this point, but that's hard for me to believe! : (
  5. With a premie in the hospital, how does breast feeding work (or does it)?
Thanks guys

  • You might get more responses on the preemie board.

  • Oh, good idea, thanks
  • You might want to find out what level/type of NICU the hospital has (ex: private rooms for babies that aren't on machines like ventilators).   GL
    Lilypie Angel and Memorial tickers
  • I have been having the same issues with contractions since 27 weeks and a slow amniotic leak and I get off bed rest at 34 weeks(next week). They said we could have the baby anytime after 34 weeks and he probably wouldn't need a nicu stay seeing as our little man is measuring bigger ha I thought my doc wasnt taking me seriously as well but she has managed to keep baby in there for quiet a while longer even without terb or procardia. You can still breastfeed you just pump it and take it to them and they will use it. its your baby your choice. but do keep in mind they might have to supplement with formula if he/she isnt getting enough. Wish you the best of luck!!
  • Im 2 cm dilated and he is right there but they are letting me continue what im doing. if i feel like i need to rest then to rest. I started to go into labor with DD at 34 weeks and had her at 37 we were there only 3 days and breastfeeding was a challenge but it ended up working and breast fed for a year.

  • My first was born at 35.5 weeks, we took her home 2 days later, no NICU stay, no preemie "issues". Obviously, my story doesn't mean it's "always" like that, but I'd be comfortable w/ your doc's rec's if I was 34 weeks.

No idea about insurance, I'm assuming it will be under the babies?

We didn't BF. Assuming you have no BF'ing complications and a big IF your baby winds up in the NICU, you can BF while you're there, pump when you're not. We rented the pump instead of buying just in-case my milk never came (which it didn't).  If you do have supply issues, you can meet w/ a LC and also look into milk banks. We just FF and it worked out just fine for us.

  • 1. My cervix was a 1.7 at 28 weeks and I went on bedrest. It went up to 2.1 at one point, but that was about it. I made it to 35 weeks. At 33 weeks I was 4 cm dialated, and still at home on bedrest.

    2. Your baby could go home right away or have to stay depending on any complications.  I dont know if any of us can answer that question.

    3. By yours or his, do you mean your SO's? It depends who's ins you are going to put the baby on. H and I had seperate ins, because he had switched jobs and my policy at that time was better. I believe you have so many days after the child is born to call the ins company and have them added to your policy or your SO's.

4.. It doesnt sound like your dr is under estimating, but if you feel uncomfortable it cant hurt to ask to see another doctor, or talk to her more about your concern.

    5. If you can't breastfeed your premie, you could pump, I would assume?

Just some advice...I know its so scary with a shirt cervix and being dialated. But I did go for 2 week dialated to a 4 before my water broke. I also went 7 weeks with a 1.7 cervical length. So it definitley can be done. Try to rest, stay off your feet as much as possible.

  • One last thing, my 35 weeker was 5 pounds when she was born, and we were able to take her home in 48 hours.
