nursing at night

do you sit up and nurse then put LO back to bed? Lately I have been nursing laying in bed then we both fall asleep, but I know this is not always the safest either...so how do you nurse in the middle of night?

Re: nursing at night

  • Before LO started sttn I would get up to feed him or at least feed him sitting up in bed. I nursed him laying down a couple times and fell asleep and woke up horrified that I could have rolled over on him! I never did it again!

  • DS' room is across the hall, so I just go in there and nurse him in the glider. With DD I always nursed her while sitting up in bed, but I never kaid down and fell asleep. I know alot of people nurse in the side-lying position to helP get more sleep, but I could never get comfortable. I could never relax.

  • I breastfeed in the side lying position every night. She latches, and I am usually right back to sleep. Our daughter bedshares with us (well, with me - not on my husband's side). I've adapted to her sleeping with me, and when I wake up in the morning, I haven't changed position one bit. I'm very aware of her with me in the bed. Also, once she's done, she just unlatches herself and adjusts her position so she can breathe easily. Initially, I was terrified, but bedsharing has worked out wonderfully. I am much more comfortable now.

  • I sit up and nurse.  I use a back pillow which makes it easier and more comfy for me.  Nathaniel is in a bassinet in your room, so usually my routine is nurse one side, burp, change diaper, nurse, burp, then swaddle and back in the bassinet.  We can get our routine down to abou 35/40 minutes, which is not to bad IMO.  Luckily he will almost always go right back to sleep, but I don't turn on lights, etc, which helps.

  • I nurse LO laying down but always without the blankets on.  I feel better knowing that there is nothing he can smother himself with.  The other plus is that I am usually too cold to fall back asleep with him in my arms.

  • I go to baby's room and sit in the glider.  Moving rooms and reading while he feeds is the routine I got into to keep me awake.  If I stay in the bed and feed him I can't keep my eyes open!

  • We co-sleep, but when LO wakes up I do tend to sit up to nurse seriously on 1 side while expressing the other (for a stash, I am full feeling if she sleeps 3-4hrs), change diaper then lay back down to nurse on the other side and fall asleep.  General safe co-sleeping habits apply ie no blankets near baby's face/upper body, I have a body pillow I lean slightly back on, DH is on the far side of the king-sized bed, and I BF (there is some evidence that BFing mom's sleep differently w/ their LO than FF moms).  I did the same with DD1 for 8mo until she slept much better in her pnp and my back was hurting.
5/08- blighted ovum, spont ab; 2/20/09- epi, VAVD, Girl! breastfed 24mo; 10/10- blighted ovum, spon ab; 12/10- no fetal pole, Cytotec; 11/20/11- unmedicated SVD, Girl! breastfed 18mo; 11/7/13- unmedicated SVD, breastfed 18mo; 2/11/16- unmedicated SVD, exclusively pumping to at least a year.

  • I sit up but when LO is bigger I will do side by side nursing. LO sleeps in an Arms Reach and not in bed with me.

This. LO goes down in her RNP for her first stretch of sleep (9pm to 3am) and when she wakes to eat, I feed her lying down and she sleeps the rest of the night in our bed. I was hesitant, but I make sure there are no blankets near her, and she is in the crook of my arm so I can't possibly roll over on her. I wake up when she fusses even a little, so I feel okay about doing it now.

  • I've been sleeping on our couch with DD in the RnP, so I just sit up on the couch to feed her.  Very convenient :)

  • When I was bfing I got up and sat in the rocking chair in her room. I had a c section so getting comfy in bed was nearly impossible.

This. I nursed both girls like this and plan to be the same with this baby. Having my children in a different room scares me. They are 7 and 3 now and I still check on them 3+ a night since they moved out.
