Teacher gifts, how much? Where to?

I was hoping some wonderful inspiration would hit me for teacher gifts this year, but nothing.  I do have 3 $10 iTunes GC I got a deal on for the therapists that have iPads (district provided iPads but no $ for apps).  I am thinking GCs, but how much?  I have 13 teachers/therapists/aides/driver to buy for.  If I spend $10 each, that is $130 which is a lot.  But $5 seems too little.  Where to?  Target?  Walmart?  I wish I was crafty and could come up with something better.

I did make them holiday/thank you cards with the kids' pictures that I think they will enjoy to go with whtever gift.

  • I have 7 to buy for and we're doing 10. gift cards to Panera.  There are 2 main teachers and the rest are assistants BUT the assistants spend as much time as the head teachers in the classrooms.

  • I'm a teacher myself and what I'm doing for parents that help in my classroom (5 total) is making them Cowgirl Cookies, but I'm calling them holiday cookies.

It's basically cookie mix in a jar...all the ingredients are right there, they just have to add butter and an egg. It's food (which who doesn't love that) and something they can do with their kids. I did it a few years ago and it seemed to be a hit.

I'm making them with red and green m&m's

  • I am getting Evan's head teacher a gift card to Wegmans or Tops... I think Tops, just because there are more locations, and I know she doesn't have a car. Probably for $20

The director is getting a re-gift of something DH won at work! It's a snowman thing filled w/ all sorts of candy, cookies, gourmet nut mix etc. I might throw in a $5 coffee gift card too.

The teacher assistants (there are 2) are getting $5 Tim Hortons or Dunkin' gift cards. I will probably get one for the head teacher in the younger toddler room too... since they combine the classes often if there aren't a lot of kids.

  • I think home made food things are nice but teachers usually don't eat it, to be honest. We're doing g/c to Target for two teachers and EI coordinator and then simply certificates for the other two. I wouldn't go below $10 for each. We're doing a lot more because it's a combined thank you and goodbye gift as well. But normally I bet we would spend at least $20 each. We feel indebted to Evan's teachers and wish we could do even more. it does add up but I would much rather give a nice gift to a teacher than another stupid sweater to DHs aunt, kwim? These people care for our children and they should be our first priorities, I think.
  • have you looked on pinterest? there are so many cute homemade gifts.  This week walgreens has russell stover chocolate on sale for $3.99.  It's not the best chocolate as compared to a local place but it's a great price.  Hershey's pot of Gold are 2/$10 then there is a register reward.  I love the carmel ones.

You could always get barnes and noble gift cards for $10.  That would buy a book or 2 if they shop the bargain section.

  • I am just wondering...is this something reasonably new, to buy teachers gifts at Christmas?  I do not remember doing it as a kid, and my Dad is a school superintendent and my Mom is a retired special education teacher and I do not remember them getting a bunch of gifts from kids/parents, mainly from their close co-workers.

  • I don't think so, my mom would bring home TONS of stuff at christmas. As kids we loved going through it...but now I realize it was mostly crap, like dollar store candle holders. My mom didn't expect anything (she teaches elementary school) but I know she appreciated things she could actually use.

  • I think the gc ideas or food ideas are the best because they can be used.  My mom used to send us to school with ornaments for the teachers.  Can you imagine getting 20 ornaments a year? haha
  • My mom would always send us in with a baked good. This whole teacher gift concept is new to DH too- his reaction to the GCs, "we pay tuition AND we have to tip them?!?!?" ::smacks forehead::

I think it is an age thing.  I can't see getting something for teachers past the age where they start switching classes during the day.  Plus I think it depends a bit on financial class.  Families where I live now just have a lot more money than where we grew up, I am reminded of that every time I take the drive out to Camden and look at the homes outside of town.

  • And don't get me wrong, I am all about giving this time a year :)
