D.C. Area Babies

do you have a land line?

DH and I have only had cell phones for about 4 years now and I hate the idea of spending money on a land line. BUT if we have an emergency with the baby, a land line is obviously more reliable for dialing 911.

What do you have?

  • no land line, just mobile phones

  • We got a land line for that exact reason.  We have Verizon, which isn't too expensive now that we have our cable/internet with them too.  I know a few people that have Vonage, which is about $25/month.  The only problem though is that if your internet goes out, so does your phone (like in a power outage).  So for safety's sake, we went the old fashioned way.  Verizon may have cheaper phone services if you just want to have it, but not use it unless you really need to.

  • we have a land line. our cell phones don't work in our apt.
  • We got finally one for the reasons you gave and so we could install a security system.  We used Verizon - it's about $7.00/month and includes absolutely nothing, which is fine with us -- it still answers the mail.
  • Yep, we do. Part of the package deal with phone, cable, internet.
  • we don't, our cell phones are on different plans/with diff. companies. I do however want to get a landline once DD is old enough to talk on the phone, I don't want her using a cell (b/c of issues of brain problems in kids who use cell phones)
  • We have a land line only b/c our phones get crappy reception at our home.  Otherwise, that would be one less bill to pay every month...
  • DH and I only have cell phones, but when we had the girls we were worried about what would happen if our nanny needed to call us or 911, or if we wanted to check on the girls during the day, or if we had someone else babysitting and they needed to call 911.  We looked into getting a land line, but found that it was actually cheaper to add a third phone to our plan.  So at 3 months old, my daughters got their first cell phone.  It's worked out great for us (although thankfully there have been no 911 calls needed).

  • Very clever cands!  I like that your third cell phone is the "house" phone... because yes, it's not that I'm worried that DH and I wont' be able to call 911 from home, it's that I don't want a babysitter/relative to have to have a charged cell phone on him/her with great reception if THEY have to call 911.  And when DD is older I want her to know how to call 911 if I collapse in the house or something, I don't want her to have to find mommy's purse to find the cell phone to call 911.

Plus, we needed a land line for our ADT system.

  • We haven't had a land line since we moved in together over four years ago.  Now that we are having a baby, we are planning on getting a land line in the next few weeks.  I just don't feel comfortable at home alone all day with a baby and only a cell phone.
  • We have Vonage, which isn't a traditional landline, since it is VOIP, but still uses what looks like a normal phone.

  • Another house with Vonage here. DH is an IT geek so I'm pretty sure we have some sort of back up power for the computer stuff at home so we can still have phone service, in theory, if we need it in a power failure.

  • living new york on september 11th taught me that i wanted a landline.  period.  we have one.
  • Yes, kind of.  We have digital phone service through Comcast.  We wanted it for the 911 locating abilities.  It's difficult for 911 to identify your location through cell phones.

  • We have a phone/internet package through Verizon, and we would have cable too if we could get FIOS.  If we didn't need a fax machine we probably wouldn't have a land line at all.

  • Yep, we do.  I am too bad at remembering to charge my phone, where I left my purse, etc. to have my cell be a reliable form of emergency communication.  Even before we had Penny I felt that way, so we've always had a land line.  I like knowing that there is a working phone on every level of the house whenever I need it.
    Peru!

  • We got a land line once our son was born for the same reason you mentioned.  It's a package deal w/the cable and internet, so I have no idea how much it really costs.
