More serious reaction or not?

DS had an allergic reaction at red robin tonight. He did not eat any food from the restaurant (only food I prepared at home). Stupidly I did not wipe the table or high chair because I forgot my wipes. His hands turned bright red up to the fingertips as well as his wrists. He got a rash around his mouth and under his chin (red no hives). Then he started pulling on his tongue and sticking his tongue out for the rest of the dinner like something was bothering him. I gave him benadryl at the table. Do you think he was having a wierd sensation in his mouth? I washed his hands and face in the bathroom. By the way, the rxn started about 10 minutes after we got there and he had only eaten corn on the cob from home. What would you have done in this circumstance. I actually freaked out for the first time tonight thinking there may come a time when I need to use the epipen.

i would have done exactly what you have. without him actually having difficulty breathing or talking, i wouldn't give the epipen. hope he's feeling better!
That's scary. Did it clear up quickly after you gave benadryl? I would make an appt with your allergist and ask what you should do the next time he has a reaction like that. Our allergist said DD's nut allergy is so severe that we're supposed to give the epipen if she eats something contaminated with nuts even if she's not having a reaction yet.
It does sound like something in his mouth was bothering him. FWIW, before we knew how allergic DD was there were a couple of times when she ate something (that we now think was cross-contaminated) and complained about bumps in her mouth. And when she had her ana reaction the first thing she said was there were bumps in her mouth.
