DD was diagnosed with a milk protein intolerance about 5 weeks ago. Pedi switched her from gerber goodstart protect to similac alimentum. She was having mucous stools after the switch and at her 4 month check up on Nov 28th (she was 4 months on Nov. 23rd) he wanted us to wait to do solids until they checked a stool sample. He wanted DD to be on the alimentum for one month to make sure it was the right fit. On Monday I gave them a stool sample and we got good news. No blood in the stools.
He told us we could start rice cereal and the alimentum was working fine. I started rice cereal with DD tonight. She seemed to really like it. About 3 hours after she had a poop that appeared to have mucus and the raised blotchy rash all over the butt and leg folds just like when she was having issues with the milk protein intolerance. I looked at the rice cereal and it said it has soy. I am thinking she might have an intolerance to that too.
Here are my questions: 1) Could the intolerance show up that quickly? 2) If I pick a non soy brand of rice cereal do I just keep an eye on her and make sure she does not have any symptoms? or 3) Do I call the pediatrician tomorrow before giving any more solids? TIA for reading and any insight! I have been lurking on this board but this is my first post cause DD is definitely ready for solids! ![]()
Re: starting solids with milk protein allergy (possible allergy to soy) FTM question!
If my MPSI baby gets milk it shows up very quickly - like the next diaper change. She will continue to show effects for 4-5 days just from one occurance of dairy. If she gets something with trace amounts (like when I accidentally gave her 3-4 of the organic puffs that have cheddar in them for 3-4 days in a row) it took a couple days for the effects to start and they stopped pretty quickly although in hindsight i realized she was slightly fussier and gassier.
We use earths best cereals that have no soy. I would wait to reintroduce the cereal until her symptoms clear up.
My son has been on allimentum formula since 5 weeks old - he just turned 5m. We started him on solids about 2 weeks ago or little more (he is around 18 pounds). We started with Gerber DHA rice cereal and it was fine but the very next day he was pooping about 4 or 5 times and it was watery. It also gave him a diaper rush. Gerber DHA is gluten free. We stopped that and waited for a week and I started giving him BeechNut rice cereal and within 2 days we had exactly the same reaction. BeechNut rice recereal does not have soy in it. We stopped all rice cereal again and waited for a week and our next choice was either just do veggie or fruits or try oatmeal. We decided to try Oatmeal this past Sunday and so far so good. he is back to pooping his normal one to two times a day and no more diaper rush. When I talked to my dr she said that some babies (and many of those who have very sensitive tummies) cant digest rice recereal because their bodies dont know how. Allimentum formula is so broken down that their body just doesnt know how to do it. She said to try and to reintroduce rice cereal around 7 months and just concentrate on veggies and meats at 6 months.
With our babies its a very slow process and trial/error game plan.
