Here is my birth story and one you wont hear too often!
I had a very uneventful pregnancy with my 7th baby Sofea Jenae born on July17th. 2011. On July 11th my water broke with a big gush just before midnight. No contractions so we went to bed and called our Midwives in the am. They came to check on me and the baby and everything was great. No cervical exams as they can introduce infection. So we waited and we waited! Everyday the Midwives came and did a home style NST, temp, blood pressure and urine. Everything remained perfect! And on the 17th I woke with a low grade temp and some very light meconium. The Midwives came right away and decided my baby must be born that day.
They made me a castor oil shake with 3oz of oil! it was horrible to get down! I also took a few labor inducing herbal tinctures beginning at 2pm. My contractions began about 4pm but were not very strong. At 5pm they got pretty bad and my DH and assistant Midwife set up the birth tub. My Midwife was the best! I felt so safe and loved unlike my hospital experiences. I was in and out of the tub several times to use the toilet from the castor oil but it worked! I was so comfortable in the water and only candles light in my bedroom it was peaceful and very painful at the same time. At 9pm I wanted the Midwife to check my dialation and was discouraged to find I was only 3-4cm She stretched my cervix a bit. I got out of the tub again at 9:05pm to use the toilet and passed a huge clump of meconium I called for the Midwife and she said "I think we have a breech baby"! I got on the bed so she could check and sure enough there was a butt coming first! I was still only 5cm! My Midwife was very calm as she has delivered many breech babies which made me calm, I wasn't worried at all! We had planned to have our other 8 children in the room for the birth but decided if there was a complication the Midwives would need room to work. At 9:30 I needed to push but held back some as I was told to let my body push the baby out but that didn't last long! I pushed twice and Sofea was born frank breech in the water at 9:40pm! She came out with a gush and my Midwife caught her and handed her to me. She was wide awake looking around and was perfect! The kids were all waiting outside the bedroom door and my husband let them all in. We sat in the tub another 15 min until the placenta was delivered then got in bed. My baby never left my side. Well except to get weighed she was 6lbs12oz and 19.5inches long. She was 17 days early so on the small side but very healthy. She latched on and nursed right away. I was surprised to find I was not a bit sore down there and no tearing at all! The water softened the tissues and made all the difference!
The Midwives drained the tub cleaned the room washed the laundry and even did the dishes that were in the sink!
I would have had a c-section twice over had I been under the care of a Doctor which was not necessary.
I plan to post my birth video online so that other women can see they have a choice even with a breech baby. If you would like to be notified when and where I post the video please send me a message with your email address.
I am so grateful for the excellent, patient and loving care I received from my Midwives who trusted in a woman's ability to give birth naturally even with a breech baby! We are planning to start TTC in March and I am looking forward to another wonderful empowering experience!
